Plus the rubber gaiter is wrongly installed. Somebody has made the common mistake of having it installed with the jointed seam in the vertical position, when it should be slanting forward. This is so that the when the torsion tube moves upwards, it isn't trying to compress an increased volume of rubber, with resultant stresses elsewhere. |

Hi Martin,
The gaiters were like this on Charles' '47. I pointed out to him the joint should be horizontal so we slacken the clamps and tried to swivel the gaiter round but there was no way at all the gaiters would sit properly unless that joint was pointing up. I know what you mean about this thick rubber seam being in the wrong position to flex properly but we came to the conclusion (rightly or wrongly) that the gaiters were designed to be fitted seam up. |

Thinking back to my days as VW line mechanic in the mid to late sixties, the recommended angle for the seam on replacement axle boots was an upward and forward 45 degree angle to prevent premature failure of the rubber adjacent to the seam. I have, over the years replaced many replacement boots that had developed leaks for that very reason. Regards, Gene |

Additional thought, we also would temporarily put a standard 10mm nut ( 17mm wrench size ) between the torsion spring plate and the stop to keep the axle housing and drum assembly from hanging down too far so the clamps could be properly tightened in a more horizontal position. Gene |
