That is how nearly all full campers would be, IMHO. The screw down lids are only for camper boxes that came with a battery installed in them from the factory. Only the right side box came with a battery most of the time.

Yes, the 85/86/87 Wolfy Campers came standard with 2 batteries so many of them came with 2 screw down lids as part of the externally vented battery box retrofit.
If your van still has original paint it may also still have some decals just in front of the sliding door. Read those carefully for a clue.

The "Weekenders" came with an electric ice box.
How does this potential for an extra battery behind the driver figure into the drivers box having a vented box and screwed on lid.

The screw down lids are an abomination to me, for various reasons. I remove the added on inner box structure that Westfalia installed for those lids and then install a hinged lid from a passenger van. I trim the hinged lid so it can open without having to turn the seat swivel plate, in vans that have the swivel seat.
Removing the pop-riveted and glued in support structure gives you a roomier box that makes battery service a lot easier, like VW originally intended.

Timely thread for me - I have an 86 Weekender, early apparently since it has the extra battery frame for the screw down lid on the passenger side. Mine came with no cover, and I didn't realize the differences before buying a full-sized hinged lid here on the classifieds. I was trying to line it up to no avail and searched, and found this thread which explains why.
Unless there's a good reason not to, it sounds like I should just cut/yank the inner battery framework and then the hinged lid will line up with the holes in the body part of the battery box. Any chance you could post up a couple close-up pics of yours, 1 with the door open, and 1 with it closed? I want to make sure I'm clear on details before I start drilling & cutting.
