I just bought this van and really have no idea what it's worth. I found it online and thought it was pretty cool. Any input on what I have and how to find out what it"s worth?

Welcome to the Samba! It’s obvious someone loved that bus and put a lot of work into it. I have no idea what it is worth. It looks like an Adventurewagen with lots of custom work done to it. What engine does it have in it? _________________ If you haven't bled on them, you haven't worked on them.

Why do you care what it is worth just after you bought it? Are you intending to flip it? Or are you fishing to see if you got a good deal?
The engine vents indicate a later year, and the nose and bumpers an earlier year, so it is a mutt, at any rate. In my book, that decreases the value somewhat. I agree that someone put a lot of time and energy into it, and that looks good from here. It could also be lipstick on a pig -- we cannot tell.
How about a photo of the engine. And the undercarriage. Those will be telling. _________________ John

The front end matches the front of my 1927 tin-top, which has the original front end sheetmetal. Nice ride, by the way, enjoy! |

1972 was a transition year. Early front and late rear. First year of the type 4 engine and big rectangular vents and taillights. _________________ Shawn

Thanks for the input. First of all, the pictures don't do it justice. It really is in very good shape. I will get a few more details off of it when I get a chance and post them here. |

If the third number is a 2, then it is a 1972 model.
As I understand how things worked, occasionally a vehicle would sit on the dealer's lot for a long time and wouldn't get sold until the next year. In cases like that, some times they would get titled as the year it was sold. So your 1972 Bus might have sat on the lot for a few months, before finally being sold in and titled as a 1973.
Also, that is not the correct engine for your Bus. It would have come from the factory with a Type 4 motor. Before you go driving it too much, especially as the weather begins to warm up, you will want to do one of the following:
Find a complete type 4 motor and install.
Find a set of the conversion tins to make up the space between the current tins and the body of the Bus.
Get some sheet metal and make some connecting pieces to make up that space.
Your goal should be to not see any light from the ground up when looking at the engine from above.
Failure to take one of these steps will result in shortened engine life from difficulties keeping itself cool. _________________ Dave Cook

I'm going with a bus from Mexico. Post your M Code.
Have you been able to register it in the USA? _________________ All the redemption I can offer, girl, is beneath this dirty hood

Isn't that a late Bug engine (or Mexican Bug) with what looks like a throttle positioner to the right of the distributor? _________________ Larry in OB

indeed, if you don't seal that McDLT then it won't matter after you need a new head or engine. that's going to get hotter than a sweat lodge.
