I've got one of the little z-shaped steel thingy that allows me to lock the rear hatch with the door open about 2 inches. With the snap-in rear screen, I can get good ventilation while camping. Watching someone's video on camper mods and upgrades, I started to wonder if the big side slider can be locked with a few inches opening too. Again, I have a big screen, velcroed to the sides of the door frame and magnet-snapped together for entry and exit, to keep mosquitos out. So if I can secure the slider while open a little, the ventilation will multiply. Has anyone tried to do this?

Leave the slider door closed and use a screen for the sliding window.

I made a very functional window screen set up by cutting out window screen to a little bit bigger than the window opening and then "framing" the screen with duct tape, sticky side to sticky side, with rare earth magnets sandwiched every 3" or so. Works great on the rear sliders.

I have the GoWesty screens for the front. They're very nice too.

I wonder if the OP has security concerns while desiring ventilation?

A screen is easily breeched and entry gained.

That's a really good idea, coming up with a way to keep the slider open and secured. The only problem is, even with a small opening, somebody could reach in and slide the little lock up if you used the latching mechanism.

You could probably do something like this on the inside of the door, secured with a carabiner or something (not a padlock, in case you need to get out quickly)

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

As far as an actual screen, I used this with strong magnets. It's weighted at the bottom and it keeps the bugs out:

My concern when camping with a either rear hatch cracked open or slider cracked open is rodents getting in. Personally in the heat of summer, I find poptop and all window screens open and a 12v fan provides adequate ventilation with out critter concerns. I know they get all over my van cuz I see their little footprints in the dust on the rear bumper and inside engine bay on top of air filter housing. Last year on a camping trip I had a chipmunk nest happen in 48 hours directly behind one of my head lights. We literally watched 8 chipmunks running up and down the front grill trying to figure out what the attraction was. Pulled the grill and boom, giant nest with a prego chipmunk chillin and staring right at me. Carefully removed nest with mommy chipmunk in tact and placed them next to the nearest tree.

I can see that. I've heard multiple, similar stories about mice in Moab.

I slept on the ground under a pickup truck in Wyoming one night (it was cold...long story) and woke up the next morning with a chipmunk about three inches from my face, staring at me. Scared the bejeezus out of me. Then I looked down and there were several on my sleeping bag. It was like Gulliver's Travels.
