NOS exhaust systems for the early bay aren't easy to find! It looks like later ones are more common. I want to know who makes/sells a good and reliable or at least a relatively good and reliable (compared to OG) aftermarket exhaust for a stock 1600 SP motor.
If this is one for the "stupid question thread" please move! |

It fits OK and lasts for about 5-6 years. Tucks up nice in the limited space. Ad your own "heat ports" by carefully removing them form an OG muffler. Minor modification will make them work. The "extractor" types with bolt on mufflers rust out very quickly. _________________ Fat chick owner/operator |

I assume you are looking for one that also heats up the center mounted carb. Is that correct? |

Yes, I'm looking for one with good pre-heat and no internal restrictions like I've read about some other stock exhausts having! |

Get the Dansk. It is not NOS quality, but about as close as you're gonna get.
They are somewhat of a PITA, but overall the best bang for your buck. |

I only buy the old Leistritz when i can.
I had a Dansk on a beetle years ago. It was fine but it wasnt a perfect lineup in the ports. That could be a different story now. |

I had a Dansk for about 2-3 years before it started falling apart. Reasonable fit, decent price. |

Is the Dansk pretty much what everyone carries these days for stock mufflers? The ones at Wolfsburg West, aircooled.net, Bus Depot, etc. all pretty much have that generic stock look. |

About 5-6 years ago I bought an Ernst German exhaust from BusDepot. At the time they (BusDepot) were claiming that Ernst was the OEM supplier. I know that Ernst is no longer making them, but have also since learned that Leistritz was the actual OEM. So not really sure who was OEM or not, but the German Ernst exhaust I bought is still holding up nicely. Never had a Dansk, so can't comment on quality/longevity. _________________ 1968 Deluxe "Clipper L" Type 2

The "internal restriction" actually winds up being a 1200 tailpipe and bung. If you can weld, get a late Type 3 one piece tail pipe, and a hole cutter to make the TP bung hole (did you see what I did there? ) large enough to weld the Type 3 pipe into. Use ultra high temp VHT ceramic primer and paint to seal it all up and prevent the muffler from insta- rusting.
Forgot- I had to get an ext. made for the muffler end of the Type 3 TP to get it to work. Here it is with the original 1200 "choker" on top of it.
Forgive the Neanderthal welds.
Finished product with adapted Porsche 911 type tail pipe cover to make it go faster:

With the Leistritz and Ernst gone (and NOS ones getting rustier and harder to find), the Dansk is the best bet out there. The only other stock setups are coming out of China and are pretty bad, and the aftermarket ones I've seen are nowhere near the quality of the Dansk. That’s a slick looking damper/tailpipe combo. I hope it mutes as well as the original style.
Either way, it looks better than the split window tailpipe grafted onto a bay muffler catching curbs and parking bumpers at every opportunity..... not that Every parts supplier wasn’t shipping those to every bay window customer for the last ten years or anything....

Yeah, the whole kit is from Dansk. It is a European market kit that we import ourselves. I don't believe it's sold in the U.S. _________________ - Ron Salmon

Yeah, the Ernst is history. The European market Dansk is the best out there now. Once Dansk stops making them it will be cheap Chinese or nothing. _________________ - Ron Salmon
