How should I fix this surprise? I uncovered it after sand blasting. I was thinking I should cut it out, flatten it, then weld it back in. Or even replace with new metal.

You have my commiserations.
You can search in the samba classified advertisement for the metal you need

There is lot there that might work fo you. It just depends on how you measure value.

I'd cut that out and weld new in.

That's going to take a lot of work to reshape and fix. Welding in new is only going to take the work welding causes.

I agree I think its your only option. Never cut anything until you have the replacement panel in hand.

You could remove that quarter panel and repair a lot of that damage using a hammer and dolly but it would still have all the slide hammer holes you would need to weld up. However this would be a lot of work and if you are going to the trouble of removing and replacing the quarter you would be better off finding a decent used quarter panel.

Goo d point but it also presents a good practice opportunity if you don't yet poses metal working skills. Replace the quarter as suggested and then use the removed piece for practice. Once straight, you could sell it or "part it forward."

What year is your Ghia? I have a 63 quarter panel that needs work, but it might work for your project and I don't want much for it. It includes the inner fender too. PM me if you are interested.

Thank you all for your reply's. I attempted using a stud welder and pulling, but there is way to much damage to continue. I will be cutting that section out later this month I'll let you know how that works

I'd fix it only cause I'm that stubborn. Cut the entire panel out. Use a sandbag and sheet metal bossing mallets back and forth with hammer/dolly work. Test fit often after repairing the interior panel. You will have to do some heat shrinking. Welding up the holes will do some of that. Keep at it till you get there. Or buy a new panel but it's all metal in the end.

I purchased a replacement panel from a shop in CA and welded in the replacement.

Contact Dan Storgaard (NWGHIAGUY) if I remember correctly) for good replacement panels. He's not to far from you and utterly reliable and his parts are affordable.

Thank you. i’ll keep that info handy. All of the patch panel work is finished. It’s time for leading and bondo to smooth it out.

I want a welder!
It seems as if I could do cool stuff with a welder.
But then I’d need a torch with a bunch of different attachments, a plasma cutter, a pneumatic nipper, a break and probably a lathe too.
Anything I’m forgetting? Oh! A hammer and dolly set.

... and an english wheel, planishing hammer, bead roller, bossing hammer, shrinking stump, leather sand bag, shriner-stretcher, slapper spoons, vice mount shaping dollies, fixturing jigs, dead flap and level welding table, drill press, band saw, and a 24 x 30 workshop to spread-out in.
