Few years back found this bad boy out by the casino near Tucson. Figured I would start a build thread for me and you.

My guess as well. Probably no port code/Westy code, two tone, steering lock, etc. Let's see the mplate.

Thats just the clean side, no welding no grinding over there.

There is always a dirty side.

This is on the other side of that wall. Its a hot mess over there.

Interesting, no port code/Westy code and no special paint code Westy's used (523xxx). I do see it has the brackets for the bed like a really Westy would have and the tent mounts so my guess was this was bought by the original owner as a normal Kombi and taken to Weidenbruck to have Westfalia convert it to a camper.

Tucson must have been a haven for no port code, German delivered campers. My 65 has a similar M plate.

Yep, similar build scenario (with yours having the additional sub-hatch installed). Factory made Westy's were in short supply to dealer's so buying a Kombi and taking it to Westfalia would have made sense to a lot of people. This exact process has been documented many times, one example was written about in the April 61' issue of Foreign Car Guide:

We should start a thread for “undocumented” Westfalias. I wonder how many there are ?

Against my better judgement, I will chime in. My Westy started developing feelings for the EZ camper the many times they parked too close at work. Now they’ll be together lol

What a cool Westy! That paint stripping turned out great! Looks like the inside will clean up nicely too. Light Grey is a great color. Congrats!!

nice project Smile
Whats the Fabrik Nr on the tag at the base of the bed/seat?

yup, It is kinda odd.

-Generally SO-42s have the X42 code on the M-code plate, and normal US codes. 5 louvered windows (M108). Single colour, painted in the back as well as outside. Paint code starts with 523

-A few have no port code, no X42 code, but still have the 523 paint code... Has the SO-42 kit, or an SO-44 kit and these tends to be fancier special ordered buses often with more options (Eberspacher, safaris, dormy top, etc) (The only non deluxe I've seen with factory clock), sometimes two tone paint. no louvered windows. (no 108) mounts for peaked/early tent and foyer tent. M056. no 110 wiring.
I had one of these when I learned about M-code plates.

-Fewer are like yours... the installation looks like a legit westy, with details people miss when bolting a camper kit in a kombi. But it is coded and painted like a regular kombi. Some have a partial kit, with the camper cabinets but no wall panels. It is like someone picked a few items off the Westy menu. A la carte, not the whole meal.
There was one in the forums a couple years back where the owners uncle had owned it for ages and had the receipts for the conversion. Some are SO-45

Yours looks converted after it was sold, not ordered as a westy.
I was thinking about that because of this pic, which shows the walls in back grey, like a regular kombi. Westys are painted lower body colour inside.

This is a normal US spec SO-42:
white paint on wall
wiring for lights by table
wiring for 110 plug by jump seat.
