I have a 6 volt system. Bug runs great and in excellent condition but sometimes when I drive it for a little while and then park it, it wont start or crank over until its been sitting for a while, then it will start or crank over after it has cooled. It has power it just wont crank until cooled. |

Does the engine turn over slow and fail to start? Have you already checked all of your grounds? How good is your battery? _________________ So far on beetle number 8

X2. Need a better description. In order to help with the problem. _________________ I have learned over the years.

It has a new battery, it runs great and purrs like a kitten. It seems that after driving it and it warms up the problem starts. When I get to my destination and park it and try to start it again to leave, it wont turn over. The engine doesnt turn, the starter doesnt turn, it doesnt even make a sound but when I turn the key the lights on the dash and everything turns on so its getting power, all my connections are good. But when I let it sit for an hour or so it will start right up. A few years ago it was doing the same thing and I was told that it was my starter, so I put a new starter on it a few years ago but never really ran it much. In fact after that It sat for around 2 years. Just last month I pulled it out to start driving it again, I took it to a good classic VW shop and went through everything to be ready for the summer. I told them about the problem but it would start right up for them(but like I said it only happens when you run it for a while). It starts right up anytime I want to leave the house but like I said after an hour or so of driving it it wont start until it cools for a while. It gets power but it wont turn. |

Couldn't hurt to check for dirty and loose connections causing a voltage drop to the solenoid, but x2 sounds like a heat soaked starter. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Perhaps a worn starter bushing? Was it replaced when the starter was replaced?
Use your multimeter to check voltage at the starter while a helper turns the key. That should narrow down things a bit. _________________ Brian

Next time it gets balky like this, might try tapping lightly upon the solenoid body w/ anything handy (lug wrench, screwdriver handle, hammer, etc). Has saved my six more than once.
Best case scenario may be heat soaking - have ya felt the solenoid when it won't roll?
Worst case is a worn starter support bushing.
Lastly - until it gets solved/repaired, never underestimate that endless, failsafe, free resource know as gravity: find a slope & use it when parking _________________

I'm not sure how compression works.
Turbos don't produce torque, they produce HP. Instead of torque.
The real problem with NA engines is you don't hear the nice whine of the turbo as it spools up.
Before I commit, I'm going to do more research because I don't really know what piston rings are. |

I believe my starter is getting heat soaked. How can i solve this problem? Is there a heat shield for a 65 beetle starter? |

Unless you have the muffler wrapped around the starter, or are gliding in from low earth orbit, the starter is not going to get heat soaked enough to affect it.

With the engine warmed up the piston rings seal up better to the cylinders, so it is harder for a starter to turn the engine over with the increase compression over a cold engine.
Have you taken off both battery cables to clean and dielectric grease up BOTH ends of Both cables? Done same with the transaxle to body ground cable?
What condition are the battery cables and are they just the FLAPS ones or the much better ones Wolfsburg West carries that are made just as the VW factory did? The battery cables you are using, do they have those bolt on battery clamps? If so time for some WW battery cables.
When were BOTH bushings in the front and to the rear of the starter checked to make sure they are not too worn out?
Have you recently, or now while the starter is out, cleaned/dielectric greased the surfaces of the starter and transaxle where they mount together? Done same with the surfaces between the starter and starter solenoid? If no, those grounds now most likely corroded or painted over, could be causing part of the problem! _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
