I can tell you this. The entire front suspension was assembled of unpainted parts all the way to the brake drums and bearing covers and steering box. The shocks were the only thing that were already painted. Once the entire front end was assembled it was painted as one assembly. They painted over the fasteners, rubber seals and shock absorbers.

Thanks Chris for answering most of them. I have put the answer in bold for easier reading. I am referring to 57 oval as the subject line say.

Surprisingly there isn't anything in black oxide.

Interesting Shocked
So under the black of shock absorber is there another paint color ?
If should you restore a front axle would you follow this procedure ?

Yes they were already painted by the supplier before they were assembled to the front end and then painted again when they painted the entire front end.

I added this thread to the Oval FAQ as a reference so feel free to post up any other finish information as well, even if it's not in the list above.

Thanks to the people who have added information.

Reviving older thread but relevant to all who continue restorations!

My case: 55 oval.

What type of coating?

1. Throttle tube
2. Throttle spring
3. Throttle spring cover, and clip thingy

4. Lug nuts
5. Rear axle nut

As mentioned above in #39, the front and rear bumper brackets are painted black (matte). I'm not certain what is being referred to by #40 bumper enforcement plate above, but on my un-molested/un-restored June of 1955 Oval Sunroof, the four support tubes that pass thru the fenders to support the USA spec front and rear bumper guard/over-rider tubes are also painted matte black. I think they became painted silver a bit later on...
