Hello!
I was fortunate enough to pick up this great one owner westy nearby in Monterey yesterday.
I thought id share some pics and document my first attempt at rust repair.
This bus should be way worse than it is living on the coast for 50 years.
good undercoating and care has kept the chassis very dry.
unfortunately a bad windshield seal and the salt air destroyed the nose.
The rest looks like mostly patchwork.
The owner had let it sit unused for about 12 years.
She decided to part with it but wanted it to run so she had a local shop get it road worthy. They did a nice job. It runs and drives great!
Ive wanted another Bay Westy ever since i sold my original paint 69 about 10 years ago.
A decision i regret to this day.
Hers some pics!

That's a solid start. Make sure you think through what you want out of your bus before tearing into it, because the rust repair cliff is steep! _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

That is a killer Westy. I hope you can preserve rather than restore. _________________ I've never met a Bus I didn't like.

Just curious, is it imported? I thought the only early bay colors we got in the states were Pastel White and Chianti Red?
I loooove that green! _________________ 1970 Westfalia Pop-Top |

hey everyone.
it's running and driving so the nose is the only thing that will have it down for awhile. it's pretty bad.
the rest is gonna be patch and preserve. no major restore right now..not needed. I want to drive it! it will stay stock.
it came through Chicago port US spec bus. bought new in De moines IA
It was special ordered Velvet Green.
SO67 D version with tent option that was in the bus when I bought it! |

Thanks!
Im pretty happy to find this Westy.
I love Velvet green and feel lucky to have it.
Just order a bunch of metal and a few little bits yesterday.
I will document and review the KF bay nose here.
the rest of the metal was inner stuff so I went to bus depot.
Not sure how their metal is but we'll soon find out. |

Nice find.
That's the color of my 69 Bus as well. It's a beautiful hue.
I think you will be pleased with the KF nose. I replaced my windshield lip and found the quality to be top notch.
I look forward to following your progress. |

Thanks!
Ill try to keep the post updated.
Im still trying to find some good used cushions for the bed and jumpseat.
Ive been driving it around the beach a bit. But I do need new tires ASAP
I was looking through the paperwork. This engine has around 10k miles on a brand new case! (in 1996). Score
Cool backstory on the bus.
Purchased New at Cars, Inc. Des Moines, IA
I have the original sales receipt $3700!
about 1 year later, The woman got a teaching job in Carmel CA so they loaded up the Westy and headed west!
They spent the next 30 years camping in it until they upgraded to a motorhome. |

Big Thanks to KF!
I ordered the nose skin on Jan 22 and it came today!
Still waiting on my Bus Depot order for the rest of the metal and odds and ends.
I cant wait to tear into this thing!
My tires should be here this week. Once i get them mounted and balanced im headed out for a trip. Even with the rusty nose.
I did find a nice orig paint decklid here
as luck would have it, i scored the correct whatnot rack and table off the bay for way less than I thought id pay.
So far, the parts collect is coming along.
Let the revival begin!
Still cant help putting around town though

That is super sweet! Was this on the Samba Classifieds? I bookmarked an ad for one just like that... pretty rare. Thanks for sharing that. I bet you'll get years of real enjoyment out of it.
July 4 1969, my parents took my brother and sister to Big Bear Lake in Southern California in the new 1969 Type 2 Deluxe. Special order paint color (same as yours, I think) through Econo Motors in Riverside:

Great pics Thanks for sharing.
Yes, it was on the Samba but the Ad was short lived. I think I emailed the seller within 15 minutes. |

I mounted the whatnot rack last week. it's from a later bay 70 or 71 maybe? the table prop is on the other side.
no biggie. it matches perfectly otherwise.
a little more searching turned up a nice stool.
I also found an original mustard vinyl cover and foam for the bottom of the jump seat.
no luck on the rear seat covers and foam yet.
I did finally get some time to head to AAA and pay the tags. AND get my tire mounted.
Vantra 195/14s
I'm ready to tape up the rust up front and hit the road for a little weekender.
Haven't even taken the KF nose out of the box.
I want to enjoy it for a bit before I start cutting |

Nice bus forsure! Amazing what salt air can do to them as well.
Looking forward to your nose job. I hope you document it with lots of pictures. I need to crack my wallet and replace the nose on my 70 too. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]
