Great Basin NP? I haven't been, but I've driven by it a couple times and kicked myself later. _________________ 1985 Tintop 4 sp GW 2.3 “Connie”

I did my honeymoon there long ago, before it was a national park. Lehman caves, Wheeler peak, good fishing, and Bistlecone pines are all good. _________________ Rich |

Ruby Mountains, Blackrock desert, Ruby Marsh, area 51 in adiition to Great Basin. I've lived in Nevada for 40 some years, so PM me if you have more specifics as to your route. There are some interesting places out in the middle of nowhere. I live in the west part, but have gotten around some. _________________ Rich |

You said in the other post that you do not like tourists... my recollection of Great Basin NP is that it is more or less undiscovered by the usual crowds. |

San Rafael Swell, in Utah, is a must see destination. At least on your way back to Oregon. It is further north just east of Castle Dale, UT. Here is just one spot to camp.

I recommend taking 97 through Kalamith over I5. In summer lake sisxaui by Shasta is a nice swim. And Nevada is pretty lame. Just drive through and spend some time around Moab. |

I think people may be forgetting that the upper roads into Great Basin are still closed in February. _________________ ‘84 Westy, 2.1L with Digijet, 5.43 R+P, GT Gears

What time of the year? You will want to avoid the San Rafael Swell at Easter--to crazy with drunken off roaders. |

Great Basin is beautiful (and quiet) but it will be bloody cold in February. We camped there a couple of years ago in November and woke up with several inches of snow on the van. |

I will be doing some habitat evaluations on at-risk species.
But thanks very much. _________________ .... |

If you're going to Pocatello then south on I-15, and if you feel like an overnight stay in that area, check out Lava Hotsprings about 40 minutes south of Poky. Cute little town with the nicest developed hot springs I've been too, decent pizza joint, and a campground within walking distance of town (or stay at the very affordable historic place right on the river in town - I forget it's name but it's a big white building with a very good restaurant inside).
It's a bit out of the way to just swing into for a few minutes, but if you can spend a couple hours there soaking / wandering around it could be fun. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |
