The recent double cab threads motivated me to start putting a build thread. Plus I'll need help. Its a Sept 66 original Pearl White stored until 2004 in L.A. and Rancho Cucamonga 2004 til April 2012 when I bought it. I had been DC hunting for a little over a year. So April 2012 I am strolling the rows At Pomona swap meet and notice a picture of a DC on a piece of paper taped to the awning of one of the Pomona regulars, Paul. I asked him about it and turns out it was owned by a friend of his and he was assisting in the sale. Paul hooked me up with the current owner and I drove out to Rancho to have a look Monday afternoon. Paul was there and he walked me around and explained the good and the bad. Pretty complete, missing bumpers, wiper motor and parts, 2 bus wheels and 2 beetle. Motor was a 1500 from a 68 based on engine number, it did not run but not froze up either. We negotiated and I gave a deposit. Picked it up Tuesday. I talked more with the seller when I picked it up. As I recall her Grandfather had 3 buses in the garages of his apartments. He evicted a tenant and when he came to confirm tenant was out he looked in his garages and 2 23 windows were gone and only the DC remained. That's when he called his grand daughter and told her he was giving the busses to her, 2 were gone and to come pick up the DC. So she trailered it back to Rancho in 04 and it lived in their garage til I hauled it to San Dimas. This is the truck I bought. Dont laff at it, its logoed.
Yeah, it had a sea blue door with deluxe trim and a Velvet door too. Was rattle can white and rattle can primer and bumped and bruised. But hey, it wasn't rusty. 
The first thing I did was build a house for it. Then I pulled the rims and drums for a brake rebuild. Then I stopped. I had been working on my ghia for about 5 years and I can only handle 1 project at a time or nothing gets done. Its just me and I only have weekends off to work on projects. I got my ghia running and actually got it to the 2013 Classic. By 2014 the ghia was in a good spot and I started dicking around on the bus. Ive read tons of threads so I initially planned to get it running and stopping and keep it drivable. I started stripping all the rattle can gray and white primers. A couple weekends and it was all pearl white again. Well except the doors. I waxed it up and it looked ok except all the places it had hit or been hit.

Thanks for posting. Can you share any photos of the Logos? That truck deserves to be reunited with a set of correct Pearl White doors. You should be a wanted ad up to try to find the proper doors. I had a really nice set of Pearl White doors I sold at OCTO 2 years ago.

Wait. The tenant stole 2 23 window busses? And the owner was just like "eh, here have the third." ? Did he find this busses? what happened?  I would have been so pissed!

Im not really sure if the tenant stole the busses or they were stolen while he was there or what. the owner did not live at the property.
The 2nd day I owned the bus i went on down to AAA to handle the calif registration, it had not been registered in decades. This ended up working out really well. As I was at the counter the clerk was calculating my fees. He asked about value...I told him I bought it from a lady who happened to work at this AAA office. He went and got her, she gave me a big hug and told the clerk she gave me the bus, no sales tax.  Least expensive car i had registered in a long time.
So trying to bring this up to 2018...but it will be slow. More pics of "as purchased".
The whole engine bay had been painted black, and the did a very good job, damn them.

If I'm doing my math right- you're the fourth new double cab thread in the last 2 weeks! Great news. Soon folks here will no longer yammer endlessly about goofy rigs with roof windows and humongous decklids. It will be all about the only practical commercial VW ever made.

true that crewcab is where it is at. 6 seats, working heat, quieter than a bus, and a bed to sleep on.

I hope you ment the truck bed, not the back seat ?? 
Back in the earlie '80s my wife & I would "camp" in our '63 DC, pull out the back seat & pedestal, good to go ......
It is really great to see all these Double cabs popping up in new threads, and yes, the most practical commercial Vw ever made !!

My '66 Sc had some kind of that grease/undercoating stuff on it, I scraped for days, ended up w/ 90#s of gunk, then used Gas to wipe off the residue.

canopy on the back, so yes, sleeping on the truck bed. Never occured to me to take out the back seat. Good idea really.

Plan was to clean, get brakes and motor in working order and drive it while fixing the body. But...
The crease behind the beam was a concern. this pic.
so, I pulled the beam. I think that right there was the beginning of the end. 
I have a friend with a pretty beat 23 window that at one time had a V8 in it. He said to come over with a sawsall to get my replacement front 3 ft of frame. So I cut up his already cut up bus for the frame piece.
Then I went and got myself a really top end rotisserie so I could work on the bottom.
And i started cleaning the black engine compartment.
I like Masterseries primer so once the engine upper was clean i put down two coats of MS.
Then with the assistance of my rotisserie I spent 2 months cleaning and sanding the whole bottom of the truck. This may not have been the best idea. I would spend weekend after weekend cleaning, sanding its summer, 100* ish degrees and everything I sand off falls in my face and mouth. Week after week and what was even more frustrating is when any one looked at my progress..., it looked like had done nothing. You cant see the F'n bottom. I also carefully un-zipped and removed the heater tube insulation Once done i got 2 coats of Masterseries on it.
Pretty muck zero rust on these things.
Oh, did I mention I broke my leg waterskiing that summer. So I had surgery and was in a cast summer 2014.
This is 2 coats of Masterseries front to back.
Ok so chronologically and judging from picture dates I am up to about the middle of 2015.

Unless you have a pretty good chassis jig, I would recommend to straighten the car FIRST. That is not bent that bad. if you have access to a frame machine you could pull and heat that to near perfect. I'd not put a chunk of frame into it, Unless it was the whole right front half.
