Congrats on all of your hard work and attention to detail. You will have a great-looking Double-Cab to cruise around in sooner than you think! I love my '59 DC. You'll have a ball with yours. DC's RULE!

Its official, I painted a bus. Bucket list check mark. Was cool to see it unmasked for the first time. Feel free to make fun of all the newspaper I used to mask and all the extra $$ i wasted on masking tape. It worked.
Im working on collecting equipment for color sanding, need a buffer and some wool pads, 800, 1000, 1200 discs... After sanding im not sure where the rebuild starts, wire harness? or? Still no trans, soon. Im going to have a lot of questions.
As i looked thru my parts inventory, i realize the parts I took off will need some elbow grease and some will need to be replaced. I located some needed assembly parts at Drag Day in Irwindale on Halloween. Picked up tail light assemblies for LED's, lenses, front trim rings for headlights. I must have checked 20 buses to see what glass and set up they have. Half were running euro glass, lots of mismatched Hella, VW but I think I figured out what I need. Clear US Glass w/ SB19 SB20 SB21? My DC was delivered to UF, San Francisco.

The fully painted "done room" is filling up. I got the 3 doors painted yesterday and really happy how they came out. Only a single run on the back door beltline, got 4 coats built up using long flash times. After i paint I let the parts sit and dont touch them all night. In the morning i take fully dried parts off the hooks, keeps me from touching wet paint and being impatient.
I have an old crappy camera, the doors look better than pics show, really. I double checked and the parts needing paint room is empty. Body next. I plan to break it down to 4 sections. Today is the bed sides and rear. The other sections will be the sides plus nose and rear window area, then the roof and finally the load bed. Not necc in that order. All these areas have simple to mask off locations so no ugly paint lines expected.
Wish me luck!

Either I forgot OCTO was Saturday or I decided to skip it and get some more painting done. The need was stronger to get closer to done with the paint job. Im treating the paint job like eating an elephant, one small bite at a time, easier for the less experienced IMO. Spent Saturday getting paint on the lower part of spare tire hole and the tool box, then masked off for the floor. Nice day Sunday but wind was on the weather report. Started early and got the front floor finished well before the wind hit my area. Here is how she looks sometime during the process of 2 medium coats and one last wet coat to finish. Seems the only time to stop and take a pic or two is while waiting for the paint to flash off.
I have the rear floor and then the inside touch ups are complete. So rear floor starts tomorrow then I only have 3 gates, 3 doors and the body. Kevin @ KCR should be done with trans next week too. _________________ GhiaBuild

Looks good. The underside is almost as bad as shooting inside the bus. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

I must have spent 3 hours watching utube vids on prepping, single stage painting, cleaning guns, adjusting and setting up the gun, air pressure, paint volume, spray fan....Hearing the same info from different voices really helped make things more clear for me, the process made more sense, info sinks in, confidence builds. In the beginning, when shooting primer i was satisfied if the primer came out of the gun and not always knowing what to adjust if it wasnt right. After the film sessions, I recleaned all my guns, re-adjusted, played with air pressures, played with fan patterns... got more comfortable, and felt more prepared. I decided i needed to lift the bus higher, give me more room, space for myself and the equipment to move. I lifted the back of the dolly on 4x4's, the front i lifted closer to 6 inches up. I started with the bottom front and worked my way back. I used 2 medium coats and a final wetter coat to finish it off. To anyone else who has painted the bottom of a bus w/o a rotisserie, you know this is a miserable little job. It is not easy to lay on your back using a gun meant to spray level, and spraying up, plus the heat tube, E-brake, steering mount, bumper mounts...all in the way. It was a freaking battle, i think i won. It isnt perfect, has just a couple small runs....just like it did when it left the factory. Progress. Next is the back half and engine area.

I’ve been painting cars for years, my first jobs were pretty bad, but with experience and a good gun I got much better. Buy a new good gun, it will make a huge difference in your results. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

This paint job has been frustrating...the waiting, the not knowing if painting or not and more waiting. Im sure everyone has been thru the same type frustrations. As i painted my small parts the other day I had a moment of clarity, an epiphany of sorts. Im just going to do this myself. If I wait, its because I decided to wait. Its a great idea til i remembered i only had a couple old detail guns and Harbor Freight $12.99 HPLV ive been using for primer. I cant paint a bus with a $12.99 HF special! I walked thru HF eyeballing their more expensive $200 paint guns, I researched on Amazon from $30-$500 reading reviews and such. I wasnt any closer to knowing what i needed. Next i visited my original painter friend who was helping me out, I told Albert about my epiphany, he laughed and went deep into the tool shed, came out with a dirty old MAC SG1300 HVLP and gifted it to me. I told another one of my painter friends, Butch and he did the same, but this time it was a new Dewalt gun. Two visits and two guns. I would know nothing about bodywork, sanding, primers, paints nothing w/o these two guys, they didnt hesitate, they just handed me their stuff to have and to use. People in the car community are often wonderful and generous. I will paint this DC, i will make mistakes, probably a lot of them, then I will fix them. When im done, I can blame it on me.
