Im back. I made a ton of progress thanks to Covid. Little work and extra time at home allowed me to work on the DC. I really wasnt updating because how many pics of grey primer can i post. I dont have the flair of someone like Glideking so a verbal catch up is all i have.
I never thought it would be so much work, so much sanding. Anyone who has body worked and painted a set of original gates has my sympathy. I dont have decades of experience, so finishing a piece that is supposed to look good on both sides is a chore. The gates took me a good month. They are not perfect but that was really never the plan, i wanted a nice driver. Seems i did everything 2 or 3 times. Often 4 times.
The metal work on the body was so good i wanted the final product to reflect that effort. My doors were never good and not original to this bus, they were oil canned and welds broken off the inner supports. The fix, cut out the back side frame, hammer/dolly and a lot of shrinking disc, re weld the supports and weld frame back.
I body worked and sanded the doors first.
Next was a month on the gates.
Window frames next.
Bumpers still need a little work but gaurds and over riders are done.
Finally i got back to the body.
Thats all for now, but more updates soon. I promise to be more attentive and keep camera nearby. _________________ GhiaBuild

Im finally done with bodywork and sanding, just waiting on a paint date. I 100% understand why a quality paint job is $20K+, so much labor. Should be painted in the next couple weeks. Initial plan is to tape off the inside and paint outside, under front floor, engine area first. Then on the second shift paint interior floor and under front seats.
This week i dropped off my trans at my trans shop (KCR) for complete rebuild. I never drove the DC and did not want to put it all back together and have trans issues. I was happy I did not go the day before, this is next door to KCR...Kevin's shop still has that scent of skunk.
https://mynewsla.com/crime/2021/06/17/thousands-of...-facility/
I need to make some decisions and any help is appreciated. Ive read for 3 hours on trans, freeway flyers, ring and pinions, gear ratios, engine size, tire calculators, RPM calculators...As much as i am much better informed im still confused as to what will be the best blend of engine/trans tire size.
Things I know... things i dont know
I will be using Stock 14 inch wheels, i do not have tires
I will be using my 67 big nut trans with RGB's, stock height, stock front beam.
I want to be able to drive 65-70ish on fwy at 3200 to 3400 RPM.
Kevin is suggesting keeping stock gears ( I understand to be 3.80 1st, 2.06 2nd, 1.26 3rd and .82 4th) and changing to 3.44 R&P from 4.37?.
Engine, I have the 1500 engine that came with,
But i would need to completely rebuild it. Not sure i want to spend that much on a single relief case. Not really feeling spending $6-8K building another 2 litre from one of my cases Ive stashed away.
Im running out of $$ and becoming more and more likely I will use the motor from my ghia. It is built on a new standard/standard case, 2007 78X90.5, Engle 120 cam, Performance Workshop stage 1 heads, dual Dell 40's, large Berg oil sump, balanced rotating assembly. Runs great, runs strong. I would need to replace the lightened flywheel with stock?
I know i can make some rpm adjustments with tire size, but i have to buy tires before knowing RPMs. I like the beefier looking tires, its a DC after all.
Im open to others experience, advice, opinions on tires, trans changes, what i might want to change on engine to make it better for a bus...... _________________ GhiaBuild

Still waiting on a paint date... Looks like it will be second week in August.
Im staying busy, still no decisions on R&P selection. Working so that after paint more parts will be ready for install.
I pulled out my Steering Box, read several threads on rebuilding to get a feel for what i would need to do. I ordered two 25x36x7 seals from Rockauto while waiting i did a quick sandblast on the outside parts.
I wasnt too worried about sand inside because i planned to open and clean.
I will need to source some copper washers for 2 bolts. There was no gasket, unless i get feedback i wont add one. I have a tube of Permatex Form-a-gasket.
Filled to the brim.
Drained the thick oil.
I didnt see anything troubling.
I pressed out the shaft with a large C-clamp. I looked at ball bearings, they look fine, movement is smooth, I think i will just finish cleaning and re-fill with 90 wt gear oil? _________________ GhiaBuild

I had a lightened FW in my '62 DC with a 1904 w/ a CW Crank. It was horrible to drive in "stop-n-go" traffic. Just awful. With less rotational mass it would windup quick and lug as soon as the clutch was engaged. Total exercise in frustration. When I rebuilt the engine (same 1904) i replaced the FW with a stock one since I wasn't planning on drag racing. What a difference. Smoother acceleration and noticeably better gas mileage. _________________ "My biggest worry is that when I die, my wife will sell all my parts for what I told her I paid for them"-Jon

Thanks, info like this makes the decision easy, much appreciated.
@Daddybus, pretty sure the plants were not his, Everyone in the building could smell it, we could ask the Tims @ Performance Workshop
5 minute job to get the correct seal in. I have one extra if any one is in need.
