I just picked up an early fiberglass buggy built in 69-70 it has a full set off wide 5 sprint stars, probably put on when the buggy was originally built. Both front 15x5.5s are date matched early 1969's. but the rear 2 wheels are 15x10's and the only stamping on them are "EMPI" no other stamp at all like other sprint's I"ve seen. No date, no size, no lemmerz or made in western Germany. Is this just the norm for 15x10's? |

Although there is documentation that Lemmerz actually did make a 15x10" 5 lug Sprint Star, they either weren't in production long, or Empi had a ton of issues getting them to the USA.
Empi would take the 5 1/2 wheels, cut out the centers, and re-hoop them to the 10" wheels. They would then weld over the "Made in West German" and stamp the EMPI there.
I have a set of 8" that were truly made in West German, and are stamped with the 1575, Made in West Germany, Lemmerz, 8JJX15, and 3/70
I also have a set of 10" like yours, but they still retained the 5 1/2Jx15, 1567, 7/67 and Lemmerz stamps, but there is also an EMPI stamp there. Obviously, they were 5 1/2" wide ones that were re-banded to 10".
I've previously heard that Lemmerz didn't make the 10" wide ones, but the chart from Lemmerz shows they did. Not sure why Empi went to all the trouble, unless they decided against making them, couldn't ship them, etc..
