Along our cross-country adventure, changing the oil on our 1978 VW Westfalia has been crucial. Here's our quick video of our VW bus oil, gaskets and filter change.

We aren't sure who that is and we're not looking to compete, just hoping to inspire others to keep VW buses alive and to travel. Peace & Love

At least TheLills.com did it right, whereas Erv would have been trying to get the drain plug loose with a 4" long stubby wrench dropping it repeatedly and then retightened the plug with a two foot breaker bar.

For what it is worth I change my oil before a trip regardless of the trip's planned length, use synthetic oil for the fill and don't worry about the oil for the entire trip except to check the level. If the trip was over 10,000 miles I would be inclined to change the filter somewhere along the way, put it probably wouldn't be necessary. I do run an improved crankcase ventilation system which gives me cleaner oil than most out there.

You should drop a mention of torque setting in that video.

We need a detailed video on how to properly flush the cooling system on both an early and late Bus. Oh, and also where to get metric air for the tires, or ayr if you have tyres. Thanks.

I've never made a single video, because I'm too damn busy flushing my cooling system all the time.

Don't lose sight of the time you spend changing the blinker fluid, lubing the flux capacitor and most importantly; waxing behind and under the dash.

I've heard a lot of people change their coolant without flushing.

Also, I've found polishing under the dash makes you go blinkers not work.

Waxing under the dash? I’m sure WildIdea has that on his list of things to do!

WildIdea, you’re doing a great job. Just playing around with you. Wish I had that much determination, I’m going to let the kids beat the crap out of our bus before I get a 10th of the progress you’ve made.

i have been using standard air in my van tires, but metric air in my bike tires. are they interchangeable? i would not want to get them mixed up.
i have american made tires, on american made rims, on my american made van. i hope that using standard air is ok for this arrangement.
however, i have an american made bike, made from British tubing, tires made in Germany, tubes made in Taiwan, and rims made in France, brakes & pedals & cranks made in Italy, frewheel made in Japan. i am so confused as to which air to use, and don't want to risk using standard air if it will compromise my safety. any help?

I use metric air on the right and US air on the left. That tends to keep things in the middle.

Well clearly with a mashup like that going on Unicorn farts are the only safe choice.

Shocked Who’s making videos with your bus? Brian? Laughing
Don’t forget to clean the glow plug Robbie. For the record I use metric air in the rear tyres and standard air in the front tires when loaded up for camping. I’ve even dabbled with nitrogen but it’s way to expensive to use consistently and hard to find on long road trips. I think that’s a late pop top on an early bay in the opening of the video Wink Welcome to the shanangins Lills.com Laughing you did a nice job with the video.

I thought it was a good video. Not useless at all, despite those comments from folks who have done this so many times that they could do it in their sleep.

But you could add, as BUSBOSS suggested, a little bit of text on top of the video itself, saying to torque the screen bolt to only 9 ft-lb. Maybe a torque spec on the main drain plug, too? Then it would be complete!

Some guidance on how to torque it without a torque wrench would really make it useful. Let’s face it, sometimes you are in a place where a traceable to NIST equipment isn’t available

Hi Lills - there is a tremendous amount of knowledge on this site as well as bucket loads of sarcasm. Please enter these halls with a thick skin.

Your video is good and useful. As noted there are folks on here that have changed oil hundreds of times. Sadly we have seen the effects of over-torquing that drain plug on T4 engines. Thus the emphasis on maximum torque.
