I am considering using a stainless steel "backpacker fuel bottle" (1ltr.) held in a bicycle type water bottle clamp, to serve as an always -available spare oil storage. These bottles are Coleman fuel safe but the wonder is.... Is it safe to mount this within the engine bay out of the way somewhere? Opposite the battery, behind the battery, or somewhere in there? Any body say nay? Done it already??
This would also make it easy to top off the oil as the bottle needs no funnel. _________________ "A life of peace and happiness depends on your own gratefulness" |

Why not just keep it in the plastic bottle it comes in?
Plastic does not conduct electricity, stainless steel (metal) does. _________________ Glenn

I keep a gallon jug behind the front bench seat filled with a quart or 2. The gallon jug will not turn over like a quart sized container. My fire extinguisher is in the same place. _________________ WANTED:

Five normal 1 quart oil bottles fit in the non-battery tray just fine. The ones closest to the engine are laid down on the narrow side so they can not lean and flip over the mini wall there. Then the ones against the LH outer wall stand up. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I figure it will be nice to always have some reserve top off oil even when there isn't any behind the seat.It is an easier pour also! I already have the bottles so yeah! My main concern was the heat, but if some are carrying plastic bottles, no problem then ! _________________ "A life of peace and happiness depends on your own gratefulness" |

Ditto on the engine bay... free storage on the battery and opposite side. _________________ Anthony

Have over 250,000 miles on our 1960 panel camper conversion. In that time have traveled in weather over 100F and as low as -6F. Rotate stock in there will keep from vibration wearing thru the bottles. Even then have one bottle that has been in there much longer than the others. That one bottle that was originally engine oil, that has special gear oil so the transaxle can be topped off. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I like your idea because it's your idea and nothing wrong with it being a custom feature. It is safe. |

You guys have me thinking about something other than my 2-1/2 gallon spare gas can in the left side. I'm going to gut an old car battery and make an oil storage box from it. A second battery strap would hold it quite well.
It's also kinder to the engine to introduce new oil that has been acclimated to engine compartment temps. Limits the shock- like putting your new goldfish in the fish tank ten minutes before opening the plastic bag. _________________

A battery box would do the same and give you a bit more room for storage. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I have a quart in all my cars. Put it into a plastic ziplock with a pack of paper towels in the bottom so:
- You can see a leak right away.
- Paper towels useful for pouring/cleaning up
- Rotate them so that the container isnt too ancient. You will find chafe is the danger and eventually will wear a hole in a bottle unless you clamp it up somehow. _________________ .ssS! |

today's plastic bottles are not like they used to be. they spring leaks like nothing else - just sitting on my shelf in the shop, brand new 4 and 5qt jugs will start leaking. (I dont buy many 1qt bottles - but the stuff I have had come through aren't any better. I keep old bottles around to cycle through for behind-the-seat oil) _________________ ...david - '66 SO-44 #231 |

Indeed. They used to be fiberboard and you punched them open with a bottle opener _________________ .ssS! |

I keep my extra oil in the well behind the front bench seat. But it's interesting to see what other folks do. Maybe I should put it in the engine bay.
Other storage things I do:
Small on-board tool kits and lug wrench (in the back luggage shelf above engine compartment)
Spare parts, tarp, and scissor jack (under the Westy bench seat)
Fire extinguisher (behind front bench seat)
Tire pressure gauge, spare fuses, maintenance notebook, etc. (parcel tray)
Spare tire (in the back passenger area where the middle seat should be) _________________ '64 standard microbus

I keep my extra oil in a bigger sump. I'm never more than 3000 miles from home. |

I keep all my fluids in a box right up against the rear cargo door and under the rear seat/ bed area with my tool box and road kit parts box so they are easy to get to. I like the battery box in the engine compartment idea though. I pick those up at yard sales all the time for cheap.
I you are worried about the bottles chafing, just put a thin sheet of foam packing sheet between the bottles. |

Then build a flux capacitor instead! It will not look like just another battery or battery box. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |
