Purchased a newly rebuilt power steering rack for my 87 Westy. I noticed some clear oily liquid coming out. Since it’s clear I not sure if it’s the correct atf. Any problems with leaving the liquid in? _________________ 87 Westy

Not knowing what it is, its safer to flush it out... _________________ 1981 Vanagon Westfalia

Thanks. I figured that would probably be best. _________________ 87 Westy

Probably you are seeing some assembly lubricant. There are dozens of seals in the PS rack that would be damaged if they were put in dry. |

That sounds logical. I’m flushing the rack to get it all out. _________________ 87 Westy

Flush the whole system (pump, hoses, hard lines) before running it. Failure to do so can void the warranty on the rack since little bits of crud that may be in the system (due to a bad pump etc.) can ruin the seals in the new rack. _________________ '91 Westfalia GL Automatic (GTA "Turbo" Rebuild w/Peloquin) and 2.3L GoWesty Engine |

I am replacing the power steering pump and have removed and cleaned the reservoir, replaced the filter and have flushed all lines. Getting ready to install the new rack. Thanks for all your advice. _________________ 87 Westy

Job finally done. I installed the new ends before installing the rack. I measured the number of threads on the old rack and duplicated it on the new one. It came out extremely close. I had no trouble slipping the new rack back onto the steering column. It went partially right on on the first try and I used a dead blow hammer to gently engage it the rest if the way. Installed a new pump and flushed both lines before hooking up to the new components. Followed others instructions on refilling the system. Worked great. Thanks for all the information.
