I'm getting mixed info on what the correct colors are for the following items for a 65

Steering wheel - Silver Beige - or? Black (Anthracite?)
Steering tube - Sliver Beige - (tech section says Anthracite)
Turn signal - same as steering wheel

Gear shift - Anthracite (but tech section says Silver Beige)
Gear shift knob - Grey to match knobs

e-brake handle - anthracite (tech section says Silver Beige)
e-brake handle tip - Grey

Seat frames -- Silver beige (tech section says anthracite)

Can someone help me confirm the correct choices? Thanks!

From the parts book:
August 1964 to July 1965
Chassis # 145 000 001 to 145 999 000
Wheel disc L41 black
steering column tube & seat frame L469 anthracite
gearshift and handbrake lever L466 silver beige

141 953 517C flashing indicator switch 8/60 - 7/65 from chassis 3 192 507 up to 145 999 000 , 466 silver beige

A reference for the steering wheel would be in the Type 1 parts book section 4 which I don't have. Silver beige might be right considering the above but the column being Anthracite makes me unsure. You'd need that verified by someone else.

Nicholas,
Thanks for the input. Would you be able to post pics of the parts book showing these. My parts books show slightly different info, so wondering why.

I have the typ 1 catalog. and the typ14 (in german). The typ 14 catalog refers to the typ 1 for sections 3-4-5-6.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The gearshift lever itself does not show a color in this catalog, but the knob shows as Silver beige. The e-brake know also shows as beige. So, I wonder why your book shows the handles and shifter as this color as I thought they were in contrasting colors.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Steering wheel shows as Silver Beige (but supeceded by Grey Black on replacement parts)

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The typ 14 catalog shows the turn signal switch as Silver Beige which agrees with the steering wheel. With both wheel and turn signal as Silver Beige, I figured steering column would also be silver beige. And, when I sanded down form the recent repaint of black, I went thru black, yellow (the main body color on repaint), and a beige. I thought this confirmed that the original was beige.

The seat section of both catalogs don't list a color for the frame. And the steering tube color is not mentioned either.

I think you are in the wrong part of the book.
Try the front section before section 1 "colour combinations" pages 17 - 22.
Then see the footnotes for the colour details you want.

Thanks, checked that section on the typ 14 book and saw the source of the data. The typ1 book does not have an equivalent section (or I don't have it).

I'd like to get some confirmation from original cars as well.

So, what we have now:
__________________Typ 1 cat____Typ 14___ Samba tech__ Other
Steering wheel______L466/L43____--_______L41_________L466
Turn signal switch____L466_______L466_____--__________L466
Steering column_____L466_______L469_____L469
Gear shifter_________L43________L466______L466_______L469
Shift knob__________L466_______L466
Hand brake lever____L43_________L466______L466_______L469
Hand brake knob____L466________L466
Seat frame_________L466________L469______L469_______L469

Perhaps someone with original 65 could comment and confirm?

Thanks!

I've added switch knobs etc and created an XL table.

I'm going to go with the Typ 14 catalog choices. I would like some confirmation though.

One oddity is that the Seat sliding lever knob is the only thing in L043 in the typ 14. With everything else being 466, I was expecting this to be 466 as well. And, I do see a lighter color under the last black re-spray by PO on this knob.

I had already sprayed the steering tube L466 and the gear shift L469, so will correct those. But, am hoping to get some confirmations before I change it once again.

Thanks,
Byas

The dash knobs are available in Grey or Ivory, even though the catalog call for Silver Beige. When I ordered the knobs, handles, etc, I assumed by looking at the remaining original wiper know in my car that I needed the Grey. But, per the catalog, i need 466. So, is Ivory closer to 466? Or do I have to paint the knobs to match stock finish?

Thank you!

The gear shift and e-brake handle look like Anthracite (though a bit brownish on my screen). Looks like the rubber boots for them are also in anthracite.

Steering tube is in silver beige as is the seat frame.

Different than what's listed in the parts catalog. Wonder if there was a change during the year.

My 1965 Cherry red coupe has the same silver beige and anthracite colors as this 1965 Arcona white coupe. My 65 was built June 1965. I did repaint the seat frames and the steering column tube their original colors of silver beige. The hand brake still has the original anthracite paint along with the gear shift.

Great discussion. Lots of 65 specific color information.

My 65 was originally Arcona White with Aero Red leatherette according the the birth certificate. Can anyone confirm that aero red has a modern-day match? I don't think it was brick red.
I still have the door panels and it doesn't look like bright red (pigallie) or # 17 red from TMI. It is closer to brick red but not quite.
Any info on Aero Red?

Thanks
Dave

Ghiagirl,
The gearshift on this looks a darker color -- could it be L43 Grey-black? Or is it Anthracite that just looks darker in the photo?

Thanks!

@ghiagirl,
The color of the gearshift looks more like L043 Gray-black than the Anthracite. Can you confirm that it is Anthracite (perhaps the pic makes it look darker than it is).

Thanks!

I would go with the colors you see on the Arcona white coupe as it's more original than my car. I believe my gear shift was repainted by the previous owner and is darker, but the hand brake is original. Sorry for the confusion.

Updated the chart with data from the cars posted by Ghiagirl and from what I've been able to discern as original from my car.

When comparing the OG wiper switch knob with the replacement that I bought, I noticed that the shape is different on the OG knob.

Searching thru classifieds, I noticed that Julian is selling the OG shape replacements. Not sure if anyone else is.

Was this the shape of the wiper knob in all 65 and earlier cars or was the other shape also offered for a while?

And for cars with these wiper knobs, were the headlight knobs also similar shaped? I've not come across any yet, but wondering if VW had mismatched knob shapes for a bit.

Thanks!

That replacement is not a Ghia Knob.
The ones in this advertisement are
In absence of an original Ghia part, people make do with what fits. Hence the mismatch. Not VW doing that, rather a long string of pragmatic and uninformed choices by previous owners and mechanics.

Here's my wife's Smoke Gray/Aero Red Interior '65 hardtop 'Winston' at about mid-way through a recent engine shake-down run. Interior shots start at about 1:13.

Although not shown, the jump seat still has the original Aero Red insert material. I have never found a decent replacement for it in any color.

Nick,
Thanks for clearing that. I hadn't seen an original Ghia headlight knob (or paid attention to differences in ones I saw) until Gregsons video (thanks!).

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1813802

This is the repro that I came across earlier today. Have not seen a repro headlight knob yet. But Julian also seems to make winders with the same knob. Is that what the Ghia winders were like?

Too bad I bought a set of winders and knob replacements of the bug style without knowing (and as they were advertised as being for both). I'll see if I can sell those and get the correct ones.

Gregson's car also has the same color combo as the Ancona white one. Again, different from what's on the parts catalog.

I think that you are getting conflicting information because the interior finish varied with the model offered.

It seems to be a 1200 vs 1500 trim deviation?

From the 1965 sales brochure.....
