If you don't replace the springs you'll never achieve the perfect ass nirvana VW engineered them to do, maybe you have grown accustomed to that soft spot and it won't matter, it's up to you, I always find a seat with all it's springs more comfy even though it wasn't bad before. And how many other springs are close to letting go?, clean them up and inspect. Old couches are often good donors for springs like that if you can't get your hands on a donor bus seat.
A media blast and powder coat is the best way to refinish the frames/springs, a wire brush and maybe pressure wash followed by a liberal coat of Rustoleum would be a close second, maybe even some sort of acid to remove the rust? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.
Please don't PM technical questions, ask your problem in public so everyone can play along. If you think it's too stupid post it here

You might make yourself insane, but... I had a regular plastic bristle car scrubbing brush in one hand and an air blower chuck in the other and went for it. I have scrubbed every piece of the smallest fur off all the seat frames of two beetles, a 13w bus, and a my camper this way. A shop vac might substitute well if you would rather suck than blow.
I don't know what that blurry hole picture represents. If it's a PO's idea of a seat belt mount they are sorely mistaken. Is the driver's side of the pass seat missing its welded pivot tab? Again, too fuzzy with your cell phone.
The gate latch behind the seat back better be off there before you finish reading this. _________________

My ‘58 has an oblong hole. You can see it right by the termination of the bulkhead wing.
Matt Miller did my seats. He used cotton over burlap.
Here’s a shot of the passenger side with the seat back laying on the bottom cushion.

The oblong hole is just a production thing - that's how the metal base was made.
I wouldn't want to re-use the coco pads, I think they will fall apart or are already thin from age and wear.
Did your passenger side backrest have a coco pad?
Later Buses only have stuffing for the passenger side backrest - no pad. _________________ How to Post Photos

I don't know when paint code decals came into use- but if I had the holes of that latch with which to deal- it's what I'd do. Or maybe a maintenance sticker from an esso station
It is strange about the passenger side seat back and lack of hair padding. The seat back is fully covered in the later models (my '66)- are they for the early ones as well? Perhaps there's an upholstering production technique that coincided? _________________

Blast and powder coat. That way it’s done for the life of the vehicle. |

Weld the spring if you don't have a replacement....I do it all the time.
Then sand blast, check all springs....to make sure no more broke during blasting, powder coat. _________________ Transporter Restorations

You can get brass tubing from hobby supply places and slide a pre-bent 2" curve around the two broken spring halves then crimp into the brass with dikes to hold. |

they are very simple to replace. i would try to find some from another seat and replace them. I have done several spring replacements on middle and rear seats.
send me the size of the springs, I might have a few that will work. _________________ SOUTHERN INTEGRITY AIRCOOLERS

I always assumed the oblong hole was access to nutting and wrenching a seatbelt attachment point. Early year might negate this theory as I don't know how far back you could even get them. Later years the nut was preattached so access wasn't really necessary. |
