Pretty simple to take apart, once its apart you can re grease everything, also good time to check the plate underneath and replace as needed.

Yes, but I would make paint or scratch marks on the tunnel so the plate can be put back in the same place. You will have less trouble adjusting it if you do so.

You could also carefully mask the shifter and paint it in situ. Or you can paint it without masking... guess it depends on how nice a job you'd like to make it and what method of paint application you wish to use.

You might consider powder coating the shifter instead of painting. It works well for the handbrake lever too. The constant rubbing of your fingers just below the shift knob will soon wear the rattle-can paint off just like the original finish was worn off. And dropping seat belt buckles down between the seats dings up the handbrake lever. Powder coat, when properly applied, resists wear and chipping much better than paint. You can get a near-perfect match to the stock color too.

If you powdercoat- remember the plastic knob's threads are easily cracked as you tighten it.

I like to lay strips of masking tape on the tunnel along all 4 flats on the shifter base so I can mark the location without damaging any paint.

If you want to paint it leave the greasing for much later. I recommend sanding off all the paint that isn't your finish color on the 6 inches below the knob so future wear looks nice (no color bands.)

I found rustoleum smoke gray in a little can thinned down with paint thinner then applied with a foam "brush" leveled out smooth and looked factory on the gear shift and e-brake. No need to remove or mask off.
