Thanks Dave. Still working to patch the hole. I'm tempted to only show the welds after finishing, but oh well

I have found during my many years on these forums to grow a pair and show your work.

1) The A Holes will berate you and tell you that your work is Shhhhh.....t

2) The newbies will be excited and encouraged, they will feel that they can do this too! There isn't a standard of absolute perfection that they will fall short off.

3) The seasoned veterans will instruct you, give you helpful advice. (Sometimes this may sound strangely like option #1 but these people really mean well.)

Best of all, you can come back and be encouraged by looking at where you were and where you are today.

Look at my Beetle thread, folks thought I was nuts! (And the newer Beetle forum is a tough crowd to run with)

Dave

That's good advice, I'll have to check out ur super build when I get a chance.
Did some more cutting, just can't bring myself to leave the overlapped metal lurking under the replaced fender

Wire brush and some ospho, waiting on the ospho to dry

Thought I'd take a moment to honor my fallen angle grinder. This one has lasted longer than any of my previous cheap grinders, but they all die at some point, I didn't even have to jumper around the switch on this one. But ultimately the gears wore out.

Tonight after the ospho dried I applied epoxy primer,(don't get me started on Por15 after a failure on a 79 bronco a few years back) I'll end up overlapping this joint cause it is what it is and don't want to do a bunch of fab that I'm not equipped or skilled for.

So, I never made a build thread for my other 72 ghia. I bought it last year and the whole lower 8 inches was rotten. Don't know why I bought this new one, guess I have a soft spot for 72's. Anyway thought I'd share,

After epoxy dried, I closed it back up.will require bodywork (mud) but mud over sheet metal is better than mud over rust and will last as long as the solder (old school mud) used at the factory

I see your Windshield is still installed next to a welded bead.

Keep in mind that weld splatter AND grinding/sanding sparks are hot enough to melt the glass and leave the surface pitted.

Always remove or cover glass.

Good advice, however this windshield is hazed and needs replaced, so I've been keeping it in place basically to protect the interior until I have to pull it

Messing around again tonight. Ground must of the fiberglass filler off except what Was packed in the welds and gave the steel some tooth for the filler to stick. I just don't trust all the voids and air bubbles in the fiberglass stuff to use as a filler layer. Next I'll apply the good filler.

Waited for it to setup, I waited too long probably from too much hardener, then formed it with 40 grit on a block. Will need another skim coat, but getting there. Too tired tonight cause I'm out of shape

Well decided to do just a little more before going to sleep, it's good cardio, not trying to hide anything, it'll have mud, but so would a Tijuana job or even a cheaper US shop or maybe an expensive one Shocked

Nice work but can I make two safety observations? Your failed grinder looks like you had been using it after the cable had been cut and taped up which is not very safe. Also, the area where you are welding and grinding is a mess with combustible materials such as timber off cuts which can catch fire and the plastic sheeting over you chassis is combustible as well - sparks from cutting and welding is a very common source of fires.
