You should probably start your own thread rather than piggybacking on this one, but my tip would be "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"
Why was he replacing the carb? What kind of carb was he replacing and what kind of carb was the replacement?
There are a lot of things he could have done that would result in a no-start. Work through the basics checklist, you need fuel, spark, and air for it to run (and compression).
The other tip: an old German Solex carb rebuilt properly is light years ahead in quality of any aftermarket Chinese-built replacement copy. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

Did he forget to hook the wire from the ignition coil back up to the idle cutoff solenoid on the carb? _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

This diagram is always good.
Start by checking for voltage at coil terminal #15 with the key in the "run" position.
This was likely not involved here, but good to post anyway.
Finally - was the fuel pump removed when this was done? If so, make sure IN and OUT are correct. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. you replaced the carb and she wont work. What kind of carb was used as replacement? new, used, condition?
Id consider putting the original good running carb back on and see if problem corrects, if so, maybe new carb is defective, needs rebuild?
How is the fuel level in the float bowl? it must be correct inorder to work correctly.

Post a pic of the engine!
We'll tear it apart.

One immediately noticeable item is the advance and retard vacuum lines from the carb to distributor are connected backwards. The left side carb fitting should be connected to the distributor front (advance) fitting, the rear carb fitting connected to the rear (retard) distributor fitting. Keep in mind front is always toward the front of the car, rear is always toward the rear of the car.
Item two is a green vacuum line attached to the intake manifold under the carb doesn't appear to be attached to anything -- it's currently acting as a vacuum leak which will negatively affect the fuel mixture.
Could you clarify what was done between the first post where the car wouldn't run and the recent post where it's now backfiring? _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

I would double check the order of the plug wires, then the point gap.
Then, see if it will run by just shooting little shots of carb cleaner into the carb from 10 inches away. If it will run, maybe check the fuel line from the pump is connected to the output side of the pump. _________________ Jimbo

Ok, he has now made sure the distributor wires are in the correct positions, all the spark plugs are firing, all wires are connected, all hoses are connected, fuel is reaching the carburetor, and yet the car won’t run. The car tries to start when we turn the key but we only get backfirings and a puff of smoke here and there. Anything else that he could try to get it running? |

It's really easy to get the wires on the distributor cap mixed up. The only real way to confirm everything is right is to turn the crankshaft pulley until the timing mark lines up, pull the valve cover and make sure the #1 cylinder valves are both closed (there should be .006" lash between both rocker arms and the valves), and make sure the rotor is pointed at the #1 plug wire. If one of the valves is "rocking" turn the crank pulley 180 degrees until the timing mark lines up and check that both valves are closed again. If all three things occur at the same time ... 1) Timing mark lines up 2) Both valves on the #1 cylinder are closed 3) The rotor is pointing at the #1 plug wire ... your #1 spark plug wire is right. Then just go around the cap to confirm the other three wires are right. _________________ My Build: '69 Baja - Dark Earth Version

Did you fix these issues? It won't run worth a crap with these problems. If this got fixed, double, and triple check your timing and firing order. |

sb001 is talking about the electric solenoid screwed into the carburetor at the bottom left. If it doesn't have 12 volts, fuel won't flow through the carburetor.
