My friend has a stock 1600 dual port he wants to sell. What's it worth? Hasn't been started in 10 years.

If you can start it and hear in run $500-$700. If you can not hear it run than $150-$200 no matter how much you swear it ran when you pulled it.

A lot can happen after sitting for 10 years.

The carb can be clogged, the pistons can be frozen, the valve springs can be rusted.

If you can't see it run, assume it doesn't.

See if it turns freely and I don't mean just move the pulley back and forth a little. At least a full rotation. Just did an engine that I thought was in pretty good shape - did a partial rotation. Turns out if I went a little further, I would have hit all the rust in the one cylinder...

I bet you could get $300 for it if it turns freely and has some compression. Put it on Facebook on one of those VW groups or here in the Classifieds

Has it been sitting out side? the case can fill up with water and it will erode the bottom, I have seen engines that the whole sump plate on the bottom fell off.

The guy built a new street legal sand buggy and installed this motor off of his old buggy. Been stored indoors in a dry environment . Installed a new carb, tuned up and then parked.

I have one in my shop that turns by hand real smooth, and seems to have good compression. It ran strong but that sucker was knocking so loud when it last ran I was really surprised something hadn't come through the case.

So, unless you can hear it run ... buyer beware.

I'm sure your friend would let you start it on the floor before setting a price.

Deals between friends can go bad if one person feels he got ripped off. Once you BOTH know if it runs, a fair price can be set where you are both happy.

Just take into account, all the pushrod seals and oil cooler seals will need to be replaced. They WILL leak within a few 100 miles after being in storage for 10 years
