jimbo would be correct.
15" powermatic planer. My garage is set up as a full time wood shop. It's how we pay the bills. |
Welcome to the Samba! Glad to see a fellow woodworker/auto nut on here. I spent my younger years in a family custom cabinet shop. Ended up owning and running three of my own.
That is a great machine and at 15 inches wide, thats alot of shavings!!!
Have fun with the Bug, although that truck looks fun too! _________________ Jimbo

So, this brings us up to date. We spent a few days pulling out boxes and boxes of parts. Some brand new, some old. Now organized and cataloged. Revisiting what the plan was 20 years ago has brought some changes and some new ideas. After all, when we started this project, parts had to be ordered from a catalog. The plan then was to show the car, and now, she wants to drive it! Mild custom seems to be what she wants. Custom dash, full power interior, etc. A nice custom paint job but keeping many of the things that make it a Beetle. We came across a set of wheels and tires that she liked and have set the ride height to where she likes. We plan on tackling the custom dash and body work before moving on to paint. Here's how it sits now. Perhaps not much to some, but to us, it's a day we thought would never return.

I love the history of some of these vehicles....you have quiet the family heirloom right there....I love the moving across the country shot too...now that is dedication for sure...
(My first car that I owned and drove (on the road) was a 1971 Super Beetle...)
Keep up the good work...

in the past few weeks, we spent some time laying out the custom dash and scouring the bone yard for the needed vents, etc. More on that when we actually start cutting and fitting everything. With everyone off for Spring break, got started stripping the body. So far, fairly pleased with what we've uncovered.
Previous body work was amateurish so we're removing all signs of it as well. Not worth saving a bit of time now to risk problems later. Driver's door had quite a bit of Bondo, but after some torch/dolly work , looks much better.
With priming/body work still ahead, and with fingers crossed, painting by the summer is the goal.

You're very kind.
The goals for this build are very different from the last one. No doubt this car will be driven but, she definitely wants to show it as well. Hopefully, we can achieve both. |

Made some more progress this week. The Mrs. seems to have found her calling. Says it calms her. Wish I knew that when I was stripping my truck. Not once did the word "calming" come to mind.

Patience of a saint. I dumped gallons of paint stripper all over the bug and hit it with a power washer, repeatedly, one sunny weekend. What a mess I made! This is a fun thread with great history to the car too. It's sure being done the right way over there. And not a spot on the garage floor. Amazing. _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

Decided to change the door hinges as well. Thought about just pressing new pins, but since we had a brand new set in the parts bin anyway...
Btm hinges came out effortlessly. Just had to drill out the factory rivets.
Top hinges were a different story. Took a bit to figure out why. Seems the factory rivets pressed the door sheet metal into the hinge. Had to clear that before the hinge would be freed. Plan is to use SS screws (similar to he jamb screws) when it all goes back together.
I like the idea of being able to paint the hinges separately. Makes it easier to straighten this area out as well.

Proof positive that real life is not a half hour reality show. It's been about a month since our last update. Body is just about completely stripped and fenders got their first splash of primer.
From the beginning, the Mrs. never had a problem getting hands on with this build. I guess one of my goals with this project is to make sure she's involved in every phase. I want her to experience the feeling that comes with all the stares and compliments. The feeling that only comes from knowing that you've touched every nut and bolt and made it what it is. Yeah, I could build it for her, but she'd be missing out on the most rewarding part.
Anyway, I think I spent more time trying to convince her that she couldn't mess up than it actually took to spray them. Even my insistence that I could teach a monkey to spray made no difference. In the end though, she did an excellent job!
Most of the hammer and dolly work is done by now and the plan for next week is to remove the body from the pan (AGAIN!). Priming and final body work then should carry us through the next month or so, with the plan still being able to shoot color and clear by early July. _________________ WIFE'S 1971 SUPER 20 YRS IN THE MAKING

As long as you know that a good paint job comes almost exclusively from the preparation, painting is the easy part. It doesn't matter how skilled one is at painting, if the body isn't prepped right, it will never look good. She's been getting excited because by next week priming should be about finished. When I told her it'd be a couple more months before we're ready for paint, she nearly fainted. In the end, 3+ months of prep work. Painting shouldn't take more than a day and a half.
What are the plans for yours? Single stage? Base & clear? If you've never sprayed before, it's real easy to get good results with a single stage. _________________ WIFE'S 1971 SUPER 20 YRS IN THE MAKING

Eastwood single stage urethane. Their electric yellow is a pretty good match for the original color and there is good support from the local Eastwood store. Can be color sanded and cleared as well if desired (not going to on this one though). Our goal is a clean daily driver for my son so perfection is not required but there will be ample prep. We have to get through the sandblasting and welding stage (its not bad) so we'll have time to practice spraying his sister's Honda Civic (tee hee) to get the muscles used to proper form before we color this bug.
Enjoying the family history on your bug and that's a great motivator to dig into yours the way you are.
p.s. ours is a flat screen super too _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

Sounds like you got it pretty well figured out. With a non metallic color, single stage is the way to go. You'll be real happy in the end.
Was able to check out some of your build threads. You certainly have your hands full and love it when the kids get involved! _________________ WIFE'S 1971 SUPER 20 YRS IN THE MAKING

So, with the body off the pan and just about ready for primer, a couple things still need to be taken care of. First off, the fuel door. 20 yrs ago, the plan was to shave it (seems the guy we bought this body from had the same idea). Now, the thought of having to open the trunk every time she gets gas seems silly. Which brings us to this
Salvaged this from an old toyota at the local pick and pull
The plan is to further conceal it with a newer Beetle emblem (will add a matching emblem to driver's fender as well) The original hood emblem will be eliminated.
Will also be relocating both the fuel door and trunk release beside the driver's seat.
Now, on to the power antenna. _________________ WIFE'S 1971 SUPER 20 YRS IN THE MAKING
