You're teasing, I guess. German beers are by law required to be made only of natural ingredients. The Reinheitsgebot, I think it's called. (The purity law, in plain English.)
Very good beer, not drunk from the bottle like some filistines do, but from a glass with a good head on top of the beer.
And then there's Belgian beer. Even better. You don't know what you're missing. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Okay then.........
Going out to the house escaping the Nor'Easter, we got to discussing Ghia Convertible colors.
I told her how the 69 was painted Chrome Blue from the factory, similar to the color of her long gone 66.
After we arrived I showed her pictures, red, yellow, blue, green, silver, black......
The one she gushed over was this one photographed in Carmel California in 2015.
https://mindovermotor.com/2015/01/14/vw-karmann-ghia-convertible-spotted-in-carmel-ca/
Anyone know this car and how to contact the owner?
Better yet, is it a factory color?
If so what color is it?

My Ghia came to me in that colour. Like this. You can see original paint on the bottoms of the doors and in the wheel arches. I didn't like it.
The original (Lotus White) was better. Like this, with Gobi Beige on the roof.:

That is a nice looking Ghia!
You did well with that.
That is completely rebuilt.
And I think that I am taking on a huge project!
Color is a funny thing.
I think that we have been afraid of color for decades, so we tend to go towards neutrals, brown, beige, Gold-ish ....... in part because we have almost always had a Golden Retriever who leaves his color EVERYWHERE he goes! 😖
Our Westy Camper is Savannah Beige Metalic with a tan/beige interior.
We are expanding our boundaries........ going to put some color in our World!
We are going to keep a tan/beige/camel interior so are looking for something that pops.
My Beetle was Bahia Red, it covered over a factory Ravenna Green body. I didn't care for either color.
Thanks for posting that OG color!
Dave

Ho-Leee Fuuhh.... You people are truly sick! Great job bringing it back & good luck to you djkeev.

Very nice, but it doesn’t look like he puts them back into service, that’s where the gamble is. I have much more respect for those that pour their soul into the car to drive it & enjoy it for what it is than someone who builds a full scale model. Don’t get me wrong, tons of time, money, & talent went into it & I would definitely cash out if I built something like that but I’d rather drive it & I know that it would probably get destroyed since I apparently have a bullseye the size of Cincinnati painted on my ass. Last night I almost collected another idiot that decided that stop signs didn’t pertain to them.
The few times that I have ever paid real money for a paint job they were destroyed within a couple of hours of paying for the job. One in half an hour by a kid door dinging it after his parents parked their SUV on top of it & another by a neighbor’s kid riding their bike between cars & falling over.
& at djkeev, there’s your color combo. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I see your point about fixing to drive rather than show.
To show is a different aspect of the classic car hobby.
I usually land in the middle somewhere.
I like a stock mostly built as factory unit, but will do safety and comfort upgrades as deemed prudent.
I fix my units to drive. The Vanagon has been our vacation vehicle for several years so I motor in an antique vast distances in 21st Century traffic.
I did not make the Vanagon showroom shiny pretty but rather it wears the OG paint with touchup spots.
It looks fine, mechanically it is trust worthy.
My Super Vert was a pleasure driver. Shiny paint, good running gear but not a perfect body.
Sadly we didn't love each other, he had to go.
This Ghia will be a similar, solid and good looking unit but not put like new. I won't be seeking rare OG sheet metal, I'll be making patches utilizing OG metal that I harvest from my donor Ghia rather than buying OG or reproduction bits where possible. Areas will indeed be a "patchwork".
When the dust settles and we motor off in a sharp looking Ghia Convertible on a fine Summer Evening, I'll have less than five grand cash invested.
My time? Well...... it is a hobby that gives me enjoyment and relaxation.... like others may golf, fish, hunt, ski, etc. Time value doesn't count.

I doubt that you're the first person to make such a prediction about their Karmann Ghia project, but if you can actually pull it iff then you may be the first to make such a prediction come true.
For that matter, I wonder just how many Karmann Ghia projects come in at or below the initial projected budget regardless of the dollar amount.
Don't take me the wrong way - I mean no disrespect, and I don't intend to be a "Negative Nelly".
(As Jessica Rabbit famously said, "I'm just drawn that way.". ............ )
Obviousy this isn't your first go-around with a vintage VW project, so perhaps you can do it.
I sincerely wish you all the best, and look forward to learning from watching your reasonably priced Karmann Ghia Cabriolet project progress.
Oh, and BTW ... have you considered the Dolphin Blue color offered in the 1958 and 1959 Karmann Ghia model years?

You are absolutely correct!
The difference might be that I'm not going for a concourse restoration, I do or make most of what I need or need done.
Basic purchase $800
I will buy my top and related parts, $1200 those I cannot make.
Various rubber bits, it will be a judgement call to reuse or renew. $500
Tires, I cannot do or make. $600
I'll make my own interior with big box carpet and padding $100
Paint and supplies $600
Brakes/bearings/etc $500
Pre bent aftermarket tin $400
You may be right, I'm at $4800 right now! 🤔
OK ...... $6000 ...... 😳
I"ll plan on $7000 ..... 😖
Time to start a GoFundMe.......
Self delusion was fun while it lasted!
Thanks a lot Pal!!! 😂

You're getting screwed on tires, I got the Nexens for $80 each mounted & balanced. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I've found over estimating and under spending to be one of those things that keeps me (and my significant other ) happier with the project I've taken on. |
