Well, I've got top color samples coming! Both the Ford White and Old GM are in the color family. On my monitor the Old GM is closest.
Went to my local auto paint guy today, no love on the L-514....... I started a thread on this color looking for brands and mixing formulas readers have used.

Hope some member comes through and can help.

What I did was to put samples of the TMI vinyl and cloth for the seats, the headliner and the carpeting next to paint samples (A4 paper size) so that my wife and I could see them together in sunlight, under cloudy skies and indoors under artificial light.
When we finally made a decision, the painter guy said, 'Perfect', and then still tweaked the VW formula just a little to take account of the special qualities of modern paints.
When in doubt, ask your wife's opinion. For some reason - maybe because women don't suffer colour-blindness nearly as often as men - women see colours better than we do. Don't argue. Just do what your wife tells you to do.
Works for me. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

I've found over estimating and under spending to be one of those things that keeps me (and my significant other ) happier with the project I've taken on. |
I use a similar approach:

- Spend conservatively
- After I finish, I tell people my budget was about $10 more than I spent

I never thought I'd own a green car but I'm pretty happy with my roulette green ghia - it looks like its got a bit less blue in it than the emerald green! I agree with going with a painted panel - that way you can see how the color looks in the sun and shade.
I went with a tan interior which is stock color combination. _________________ 1960 Beetle ''Heidi" daily driver

So, while we THOUGHT that Emerald Green L-514 was our sought after Holy Grail of color...........
Alas, it sadly is not.
I found an online source for a can of spray touchup Paint.
Automotive Touchup.
I sprayed a test spot and proudly displayed it along with the chosen Convertible top color choice...... "No, too Green, more Teal like".
Shot down!
Not being easily defeated, off to Home Depot we went seeking the "proper" Color.
We brought home their PPU13-01 Caribe paint chip.
I will get a quart mixed up in high gloss so we can get a good idea of the proper color over the chip.
If this test is acceptable I'll take my sample to my Auto Paint guy and have it color spectrum analyzed.
Early results are good anyway!
Color reproduction is poor but here is the color chip on the seat with the Ford white Convertible top sample.
On main concern is choosing a color that goes well with very light colors.
The camera makes this a lot more blue than Teal........ actually none of the colors are well represented!
EDIT: I placed the color chip on top of my iPad, see the difference! ? Still far from actual color, the actual color chip is quite a bit darker, more teal.
EDIT the EDIT: yet another photo getting closer.....
Edit the edited edit: still not there, but much better...... I give up!
We plan on reupholstering the rear seat to match or at worst blend well with the Chrysler Town and Country front seats. "Light Greystone Cloth"
I found this Automotive fabric, Transpoters Auto Fabric - Jupiter. There are three shades that look possible on the monitor so I sent away for all three samples.
I think the pattern is slightly different but if the color comes in, I'll order up a few yards to do the back seat, the Convertible Hinge Covers and the front door panels.
That will give the Wife a task to do on bringing this project in!
This is a pretty good shot of the Chrysler seat pattern and color even.......
And here is an online shot of my iPad on top of the Chrysler seat, the colors are way off but you can see the texture similarity.
Unless someone knows of a source for the correct Chrysler "Light Greystone Cloth" ???? A 2012/2013 color, maybe even newer?

Dave, this Ghia may very well be L360 Sea Blue which was offered on Ghias for several years in the '60's. Note that it is a later Ghia which has been "backdated" slightly- clear front blinker lenses, no reverse lights on the bumper, no "VOLKSWAGEN" script on the engine lid to the left of the lic. plate, thru '65 outer mirrors, nipple hubcaps which were accessories for 5-bolt wheels though these wheels appear to be 4-bolt chromies. Very nicely done. See the single large speedometer and the wide rear axle track? Zooming in on the frontal shot I don't see a fuel filler flap. Makes it a '67.
Since you're asking for opinions on your (wife's) Ghia color, I think SeaBlue would go well with your seats. But don't make the interior too bland. Consider 2-tone door panels with a similar blue as SeaBlue on the lower 2/3 of the panel, and a vinyl to match the seat color for the upper 1/3. Sewfine could probably make them for you like that. Or like this scheme-
Top color... off-white.
Might even consider blue Square Weave carpeting to make the seats "jump" visually. https://sewfineproducts.com/Carpet-for-VW#Solid%20Loop

Excellent that the decision process on exterior colors seems to be sewn up.
As to the door panels, is the right door panel in similarly good shape, that it can be salvaged? If so, consider 2-toning them using good vinyl spray paint. You can use the long chrome strip near the center as the color dividing line. I've had excellent results many years ago with SEM spray cans. Had a mixed set of blue and black spare panels on a Beetle which I painted off-white with the SEM. Clean the panels really well, then set them (and the can) out in the spring sun for 1/2 hour to heat up the vinyl. Spray on 2 thin coats, and a final wetter coat. You can also carefully detach the vinyl beading around the panels, and staple on a contrasting color beading. |
