Nothing new. Just storing it under the deck until ready to install. It will be one of the last things I do since I cannot fit the bus into my garage with it on. So I need to do all the mechanical work in the garage before the top goes on... likely install in Feb/March on a warmish day. _________________ Dave O

Total $8105 + $565 + $215 = $8885

Dave, not sure what your plan for kitchen fuel is but don't mount a permanent propane tank. I'd plan for a CampingGaz 904 or 907 portable small tank inside your van like Europeans do it. These are commonly available for exchange when your's runs out. You buy the first full one and then trade it in at a campground store when it runs out, $20 exchange. I only had a single burner Westy stove connected so the 904 was enough for 1+ months, used daily. The taller 907 is slightly easier to find when it is time to exchange and a better choice for 2 burner regular use. Then you will need a regulator that accepts this type of tank, again common and available for under $20. In some countries this GAZ stuff is also carried at hardware stores and even some big box stores in the Wmart class.

For a extra burner and/or for outside use I recommend taking a common butane stove as the fuel canisters are readily available. I use this slightly more compact one because it both accepts smaller pan bottoms and has a lower max heat output.
https://www.amazon.com/GS-3500-Portable-Colorbox-C...tane+stove
I brought home my empty Gaz 904 tank for reference purposes.
It is 8" diameter and 7.5" tall. The 907 tank is the same but taller.

My bus came with 3 of those large propane tanks. The problem is that basically each country has it's own tank type and they generally do not carry adapters for other countries tank types when you go to fill up or exchange your tank when it runs out in a country other than that of the tank type that you have. My tanks are GERMAN and only are exchangable in GERMANY and AUSTRIA. I know that I should buy a Czech tank, but my tanks never seem to run out. >>> Actually I got a guy to fill up one of my tanks in Hungary - really nice guy, he said it was totally illegal to do what he did --- he emptied my tank and filled it up. He did it all for free
Dave, I have 3 of these German tanks > if you want one I'd be happy just to give you one. Then you could exchange it for a full one in Austria or Germany. Just a thought if you want to save a few bucks. _________________ www.edwardpowell.com |

No need for any big tank, I exchanged the compact Gaz 904 and 907 tanks in 5 different countries, none of them Germany though I saw them there as well. You don't get them refilled, you exchange them for full ones when yours runs out. Campgrounds, gas stations, hardware stores, camping stores, big box stores, I saw them on offer many places where camping is popular. The simplest way is to ask at the campground office as if they don't offer them they should know who nearby does.

With my Westy stove I used propane at first then switched to butane/propane. But I don't really have any way of knowing what the refilled exchange tanks had in them and I expect it varied.
The empty 904 tank I brought home has a small paper label that says only:
________
UN 1965
BUTANO
2
________
I got it at a campground in Barcelona, in trade for one I got in Amsterdam.

Interesting.
Looks like the UN 1965 is a code for 'UN 1965 Class 2.1 Hydrocarbon gas mixture, liquefied'.
And the tank was likely filled with Butane, not Propane or a mix.
Anyone else travel in Europe and have an exchange of a propane tank? I'll do an internet search too.
edit:
Found a good reference
https://www.andysgas.net/campingaz
I'll likely plan on the 907 size since it is most popular. (I am assuming that my Coleman stove/grill will run on the butane as well....)
Mark, Can you take a pic of the 904 tank with a regulator attached and give me total the height dimension? Thanks! _________________ Dave O

Sure, here are a couple photos for reference.
Europe Camping GAZ tank 904 blue cylinder info, Westy stove on butane
8" diameter
7 1/4" tall with cap removed
7 1/2" tall with cap/handle installed
8 3/4" tall with my 29 mbar butane regulator installed
I used this with a stock US model Vanagon Westy stove while traveling

One small thing to consider when designing the place for the tank. Don't make the space too tight or you may not be able to spin the tank when needed. The regulator screws down into threads in the top of the tank. So to install or remove the regulator, either the tank or the reg must rotate a few complete turns. The reg hose will twist if you try to rotate the reg instead of the tank. Or you could unscrew the hose from the reg then spin the reg, if the reg you get allows this.

I got a head start on my European van. I came across a great deal on a very clean 1990 2wd automatic full westy that will be going over. Automatic isn't ideal, and I could change the trans, but I'll see. It may still get a high top here, but definitely one over there if not. I have a bit of maintenance and minor upkeep to do to it, but we are shooting for next summer I think! _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

I am in the midst of tearing apart my '77 911 to send to the painter and it is taking up my lift. The bus is waiting its turn. Pic from this morning.
I should have it off the lift in a couple of weeks and will then put the bus up for a few months while I do the mechanical work. I hope to have it on the road in February, high top install in March, and Key West maiden voyage in April. (That's what I say now....) _________________ Dave O
