Lately I have noticed that the euroBus has a dull clunk up front, not hard though, when I back up at full steering lock. I have looked and cannot find anything rubbing and it is definitely from the front end and every wheel rotation. This was there with the Nokians so it is not the new tires per se.
I had a thought that maybe it was the front wheel bearing so I jacked up the passenger front and there was a little more play at 12/6 than I would want, but nothing egregious.
I pulled the bearing cap off and very slightly tightened the bearing to the proper play.
Then I thought well maybe I should check the driver's side too of course.
The drivers side had about the same play (neither side had been adjusted after the bearings were installed a few thousand miles ago) so I pulled that bearing cap..... and out came a sea foam blue goo.... the grease that I have been using is a dark blue. No bueno.
I removed the brake disc with the bearings and noticed that when I pulled off the disc the inner bearing seal was hung up on the spindle... hmmmm. Looks like the seal lip had gotten damaged when I installed it the first time and was letting water past and into the bearings which made a nice frothy mix. I cleaned everything up, repacked the bearings twice, installed a new seal and all seems well. The spindle surface looked fine as did the bearings.
It was lucky that I did this maintenance now or I'd have prematurely failed wheel bearings somewhere in Europe in the future.
Oh... I never did solve that clunk. I'll just not back up at full lock... that will solve it. _________________ Dave O

The dash blower fan occasionally makes a squeak when running so it was time to lube it. The Mullendore port operation is excellent under this situation.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
Two good squirts of TriFlow directly on the bearing while running on low and the fan motor is very happy... and so am I.
I was one cell off on my holes so the far right hole was not used. Shine the headlamp through the middle hole and look up at the end of the bearing from the left hole. Use TriFlow with a long tube (heat shrink tubing two together) up in the left hole and set it right up near the end of the bearing you can see. It takes a few trial looks to get the right angle to see the end of the bearing.
Seal the holes up with aluminum HVAC tape. Bob's your uncle.

I wished it happened in my country. Full set would have been mine. I had spoiled front ac duct. I got one through The samba classifields. Later my friend brought it for me when he visited my Country.
I also appreciate you keep cost of your project. I did not. I got scared. |

I was/am too.
I'll never keep track like this on any of my other cars (except the 1977 911 I am restoring but that is for insurance purposes). I am shocked at how much $$$ it adds up to. My initial estimate will be low by $10,000 - $15,000. And of course my labor is free... _________________ Dave O

Even more so in that you seem fairly sensible in your spending (comparing to myself 😬) no fancy bumpers, seats - all pretty straight forward necessities. This will be a fantastic thread for the newb vanagon owner with large ambitions. A bit of a reality check. “Read before clicking the ‘buy now’ button” _________________ '91 Westfalia, Bordeaux Red Pearl 2.1L 2wd Auto

I am also thankful for Dave's running total. The pennies do really add up and being practical (lubing that blower motor instead of replacing it) is a way of life we should all follow. Must be something about the engineer's mindset! _________________ '86 Syncro Westy SVX |

Great information throughout this thread. Thanks.

I was curious how they'd stack up against each other. Pleasantly surprised they were all about exactly the same. Only a variation of one number in the last digit at the max. _________________ Dave O

Nice work, Dave. I especially like the high-current terminals that Overkill has added to the Xiaoxiang BMS and the heavy gauge cables you have used. Very clever use of the cutting board "handles" too!
And now embarrassing question - - are you just gonna let that Bluetooth dongle dangle? _________________ '86 Syncro Westy SVX |
