I’m sorry, I have been holding up progress on Dave O’s Europe bus.
New trans installed, and he can now have the lift back.
Carry on, Dave O!

KJ is modest. He only needed the lift for a few days. Man his original trans was howling so bad you could barely hear each other yell across the front seat...
I hope to have the bus on the lift this weekend.
I want to drive it some and get a video of the engine running and a compression test before I pull the engine and transmission. I ordered a Rocky Jennings 2.1 and likely will sell the long block locally rather than pay to have the core shipped to the other coast. _________________ Dave O

Got the bus ready to put on the lift today and had a couple of interesting experiences along the way.
The last time I drove it the power suddenly went way down but it 'ran' fine. No misfires, mixture was fine, idled well, but had NO guts and would not get above 30-40 mph. Based on what I've read for years on the samba this was sounding like a clogged cat or exhaust. So today I pulled the exhaust and found this....
The innards of the cat had broken loose and created a perfect plug. What are the odds this happened in the last 100 miles I had it at home and not on the 1600 miles from Denver to MD. That plug was a long time in the making I think...
After I reinstalled the cat I ran the engine and it was fine for the first two minutes and then ran hella rich. Hmmm seems maybe an O2 issue. Those wires were battered and abused more when fooling with the exhaust. Unplugged the O2 wires and everything was fine.
Did a few errands and 20 miles later pulled into the garage and did a video and compression test. 140, 160, 140 ,160. Not bad for 171,000 miles.
The bus is now on the lift and ready for a fall/winter mechanical rehab.

I foresee a collision of the NAHT and the ceiling if this work isn't sequenced properly.
Enjoy the work ahead! _________________ - Jim

Spending money today...

Complete coolant replacement set from new radiator, SS lines kit with metal bits, and all hoses
Rear brake replacement kit with new flex lines
Gas tank seals and expansion tank seals
$2400
And previously ordered a Gary Lee rear hatch rack

Dave I forgot to ask which model nokians you decided to go with.
Also I love my gary lee rack. Really saved me from having to do any drilling with swing aways.
Looks like you will be making your projected deadlines at this rate. |

Another epic parts order from Van Cafe this time with a turkeyvan 10% discount. Saved $380...

10' Fiamma 45S awning and brackets
ARB 2500 awning room with floor
Front brake kit and new calipers and lines
Cat for the exhaust
Exhaust hardware and gaskets
Tune up kit
Ignition switch x2
Schwenk springs
XHD revalved Bilstein shocks all around
Locking storage drawer for drivers seat

4 CV joint kits
$3900 with shipping.
$12,100 + $3900 =

I've been running those on my hightop '75 for over a year and have been really happy with them. Used the 15x6 ET45 steel wheels that were on my Passat drivetrain donor.
Coming right along. Wish I could say the same about my European travel plans right now, the money flow to the savings for the trip has been in reverse this month .. damn root canal. |
