So I have split the case and found the only damage was to the #1 rod bearing. Everything else looked surprisingly good. I dropped off the crank assembly and case today. The machinist inspected everything and confirmed it appears to be a low mileage VW remanufactured engine assembly. Unfortunately the previous owner never changed the oil! Anyway, the cam, lifters, oil pump and case all looked exceptionally good to the VW specialist. I have decided to stick with the original crank, original square boss heads, 83mm pistons and the stock 30 PIC carburetor for now. I would like to upgrade at a later date to small dual carburetor's or a single 2 barrel. Would it be a good idea to upgrade the cam now? If I do change the cam I'm thinking of a Engle 100. |

Wouldn't break any records, & it may lope at idle.
The real limiting factor is the 40HP heads w/ their tiny valves & poor breathing.
Might help a bit to lose the native 1:1 ratio 40HP rockers & install some 1.1:1s from the 1300-1500-1600 series, or find a set of the Brazzy 1.25:1s (made on VW factory forgings).
Other mild upgrades:
Add a performance distributor w/ a decent advance curve.
Lighten the flywheel to 10lbs or so & balance the entire assy. _________________

I play with 40hp engines, built a stroker on my last build and honestly they just don’t breathe good enough to do anything spectacular to for induction.
The only reason I put a 69 crank in mine was for the sport of it.... I have a set of 83s I was gonna put on it too... but decided to just build another engine for those.
In my experience, the best thing to do is build them with attention to tolerances and balance them... they’re just simple little work horses for an economy car...you can make them tic like a precision time piece, but they just ample enough to drive the vehicle around.
If you want something you can descretely enhance and maintain a simplistic, vintage look... 1600 sp is th smart way to go... you’ll be time and money ahead. |
