well, Im jut adding another to the list...my Azur 51 has a black tank. |
Thanks for helping.
I know that most have black fuel tank, but i is still wonder how it can be that so many have old painted fuel tanks.
But it could be an early production but then is the question when come this change? I see more painted from 1950 then 1952. |
I think the answer is Lazy German factory workers! |
Haha lazy German workers did´n exist in the 50´s. _________________ Me and my sons cars Typ1 -49 -50 -51 -52 -52 -53 -53 -54 -55 -55 -56 -56 -57 -58 cab -64 cab

Hi Jim!
Thank you for stepping in.
I've been learned that all the split tanks were bodypainted.
But now i learn that is could be the early one that was bodypainted and the newer splits was blackpainted.
Now it´s quite obvious that there are original painted fuel tanks but when did it end? _________________ Me and my sons cars Typ1 -49 -50 -51 -52 -52 -53 -53 -54 -55 -55 -56 -56 -57 -58 cab -64 cab

I love to learn.
I found an other thread about oval fueltank.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
In that thread there is same thoughts that i have so bodypainted fueltank exist.
Here is what one wrote.
(Following does not apply to standards!, export only)
up to april 1951: Same colour as the car.
from april 1951 to mid 1955: Sedan: Matt black, Cabrio: same as the car.
from mid 1955: bluish grey on most cars. _________________ Me and my sons cars Typ1 -49 -50 -51 -52 -52 -53 -53 -54 -55 -55 -56 -56 -57 -58 cab -64 cab

Early cars = black tank until 1949 when the new larger fueltank was introduced.
Colour-matched fueltank 50-51 until crotch coolers was introduced then black again.
I have had had all possible colours unrestored beetles 48-53. Still have some. : ) |
Of course colour-matched fueltanks excisted as I wrote earlier.. |

Hi Thanks for your help.
I've missed your previous post but have read it now.
I have always known that there are painted fuel tanks but I thought that all split 49-52 had body painted fuel tanks, now I know that the later split will have black fueltanks.
Thank you for your help, now i learned something new.

Hi Mika!
Shall the fueltanks from from april 1951 to mid 1955 not be painted black? _________________ Me and my sons cars Typ1 -49 -50 -51 -52 -52 -53 -53 -54 -55 -55 -56 -56 -57 -58 cab -64 cab

Quite a contrast from the black fuse cover just to the right of it. _________________ '63 Ragtop |

I am the second owner of an August -51 split which I finished restoring last year. The fuel tank had to be repaired due to corrosion. When preparing for repainting it I had to put considerable effort into finding a perfect match to the original colour. Like Mika says it was not black but rather dark grey with some blue in it. An experienced auto painter was very helpful in finding the correct mix. |

Excellent point Mark!
Now those of us with 'color-challenged' tanks have a better basis to go by. |

I can see how that could be. I always assumed it was just a dulled black due to age. But a super dark grey it could be. Do you have a paint code? _________________ Kevin "Wiggy"
