Does this look like the death blow to my Eurovan?
I just bought it, only has 82,000 on it. Mechanic said I should just get a new motor as that is easier than fixing it. Just wanted some opinions

Did you get a second and maybe third opinion? _________________ '03 MV |

A timing chain is an expensive job wherever you take it, but a shop recommending a motor replacement on an 82K motor in lieu of replacing the timing chain (if it actually even needs that...) -when new motors are difficult to find and ridiculously expensive- needs to never be visited EVER again. The labor on replacing the motor is nearly the same as replacing the timing chain.
Get the codes cleared, drive it for a while and take the vehicle to another mechanic (perhaps the VW dealership...they are the last place that wants your money to do any work on your Eurovan) to see which codes still pop up. _________________

Why not just make a custom set of wires with a Y splice in them. Then you could just run one distributor. |
I don't think electrickery works that way |

That's where I was going with my comment, a few other opinions are in order. Unless that engine has been really abused, I don't see how all of this happened in 82K miles. I second taking it to a VW dealer that knows Eurovans, not all do.
Good luck. _________________ '03 MV |

A late night visit with a can of gas would do honest mechanics a favor. _________________ .ssS! |

I am in the process of getting more opinions as we speak. I too think an 82000 mile engine is worth saving. If looking for a donor engine I would probably be happy with one that had 82000. I will keep you posted as this unfolds Thanks for all the input |

Mechanic either doesn't want to deal with you or the Eurovan
I just had a timing chain & tensioners done on my 2010 CC with a 2.0T,
and I realize there is a difference, but the job cost $3K I was not happy to pay.
I had thought I'd bought a late enough car, that the timing chain tensioner issue didn't affect it, like the earlier 2.0T.
My mechanic said if I was going to keep the car, that it should be done, and he doesn't up-sell or do jobs simply to pad his bill.
When the tensioner fails the chain gets sloppy, and can/will lead to valve & piston collisions.
That service advice you showed says nothing about internal engine damage having happened.
Find a better shop, modern VW's if maintained, will last 300K, but the electrical & plastic stuff will nickle and dime you to death. _________________ Good Luck

That engine should last three or four times the current mileage. Sometimes mechanics throw out BS quotes and comments just because they don't want to work on a vehicle. No self respecting VW tech would condemn a VR6 with that low of mileage unless there were some pretty severe mitigating circumstances. These are tough little engines. _________________ Casey--

A friend and I just pulled an 02 vr6 to have the transmission rebuilt, we did the timing chains while it was out.
Point is, this engine has 206k miles on it, the timing parts we took out were original and looked great. In the process, we "split" a timing solenoid while trying to remove it and just jammed it back together and then we dropped a cam adjuster on the concrete floor in the process. All said and done this engine runs fantastic even after our abuse.
The timing job was pretty easy, pulling and putting the engine back in on the other hand was a lot of work. |

Update! Found a shop to do the timing chains (not a bad price either). Their second opinion confirmed it so in it went. |

How did they find out it needed a timing chain job? Was there the camshaft position error code? |

Hey,
Just pulled some codes off my 2003 Eurovan MV, P03040 and P03045.
Cam shaft ‘A’ in banks 1 and 2 issues... Do these codes sound familiar to anyone?
If they need to pull the transmission and get to the timing chain, what sort of cost am I looking at? $3000, $4000?
Thanks |

i certainly wouldn't start with condemning the chains because of these two codes. how many miles? do the code return immediately if cleared?
could just be a loose wire/connection or bad sensor. |
