That's what I think; if nothing "jumps into my hands" at the Bug-O-Rama, looks like I'll be doing MoFoCo or KCR.

It's time, and of course I did budget/plan for this in its resurrection, and now kicking myself that I just didn't do this as matter of course then !!!

On smooth flat pavement (not a horse arena) can you put it in first with the engine off and start it with the clutch in, and feel for a lurch?

I ask because I saw a Sachs pressure plate go bad out of the box last year. Took two engine pulls to diagnose because I assumed the new part had to be good....

No, it did not lurch ahead.

I have purchased a transmission from MoFoCo. After 260K miles, and 220K of that with my 1835cc engine, it's time.

The transmission arrived yesterday; I opened the box this afternoon, was packed very well.

I had been planning on removing the fill plug and checking the gear oil level anyway, as I knew many rebuilt transmissions are not shipped/delivered containing oil (knew this from where I worked in the 1970s).

The transmission had a tag stating that it had no oil, so now that's a known. I have a 4-quart container of Valvoline gear oil for this (5.3 pt capacity). Looks like a brand new bowden tube mount.

I also confirmed that it's set up for my 1970 type of release bearing. Might also be a brand-new clutch arm assembly.

I'm planning the install for the mornings of April 7 and 8.

I added the Valvoline gear oil in Phoenix because I could simply use a funnel.

I transported the transmission up north in its shipping box and packing. The transmission itself weighs about 80 pounds so I can lift it by myself (when not in the box).

Engine R&R went smoothly, just a little rear rubber seal came unseated. Transmission removal was straightforward, just a pain to move the axles then lock the rear brakes so I could get the 12 CV bolts loose.

I replaced the front transmission seal and mount because I had no idea of their condition, and likely were the originals, and this is the time to attend to those.

I got the transmission installed, and made sure that the clutch cable would not fall off the pedal during all this. I cleaned up and installed the ground strap. I replaced the accelerator guide/bowden tube with new, but later found out that the Mexican-made replacement was 1" too long, so couldn't use it as then my cable wouldn't reach the carb.

Release bearing swapped over. Transmission in.

Talked to Ken at European Auto Machining at the Bug-o-Rama (he did my engine machining), and he recommended re-doing the crankshaft oil seal since mine was leaking a little and the engine would be out anyway. Good thing: the spring of the seal had come loose somehow, I had never seen that before in a VW even when I was workin' on them !! Replaced the O-ring in the flywheel too.

I installed the engine all by myself (no helper for any of this), used the 10mm x 1.5mm x 70mm allen head bolt I bought for the upper left engine mount, uses an 8mm allen drive.

I'd put about 400 miles on the rebuilt engine, and it had started running poorly at about the same time the transmission went south, so I'd put the engine issues on the back burner. But it was time for valve adjustment and oil/filter change anyway, so I decided to check the valve adjustment. #1 and #2 were perfect, but here's what I found on#3 intake:

The rocker and its threads were OK, and after watching baseball and the Masters I was getting antsy, so I decided to REVERSE the adjuster just to try out, and adjusted it using needle nose visegrips and the locknut. Well, that pretty much "solved" the engine issue I'd been having. I ordered real replacements for the adjuster and nut (set of three for $12 shipped).

So I drove the VW about a mile yesterday, seemed to shift OK; can't give it a real tryout until I get the replacement valve adjuster parts.

Were the adjuster and nut just sitting in the head?

Actually, both were on the valve cover.

Bet you'll be more careful about making sure to tighten the lock nuts down from now on. Wink

April 7 installed the transmission, engine, new gland nut, new crankshaft oil seal; installed the bad adjuster backwards because I was antsy to try it.

Got new adjuster and nut, installed readily, and valve clearance set. Drove about 5 more miles (still having separate issue with the engine stalling after essentially not being driven 4 months, but that's not relevant to the transmission).

Anyway, did a fair amount of upshifts and downshifts, and into reverse, seems fine. I didn't replace the shift plate, but didn't have to monkey with the gearshift base adjustment either. So I'll be giving MoFoCo a nice rating in their feedback thread.
