I bought a CSP Wiper to replace the one in my 1976 Bus. The instructions that came with the wiring were a little light in detail. The motor bolts up and it looks like it will work if I can get the wiring sorted out.

This is the motor I purchased:
https://www.csp-shop.com/en/electric/wiper-motor-955-113-211q-31051a.html

Here it is bolted to the wiper chassis and armatures:

On the original plug it appears that the green wire is 53, the blue wire is 53a, the red wire is 53b, the white wire is 31b and the brown wire is 31.

I believe the according to the CSP sheet the red wire on the new motor is 53b and the blue wire is 53. It seems last position next to the blue wire would be 31. It the stands to reason 53 would be the position on the other end. 53e on their sheet would the match up to 31b, the white wire on the plug? Does that seem right? Has anyone hooked one of these up before? I am using the stock 76 wiper switch on the steering column. Also I took a photo of the plug on the motor. If I have the positions correct 31, 53e and 53a appear to link or go contacts underneath the plug.

Color codes for the numbers mentioned in the pic are shown on the diagram, tracks #16-#19: https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/wiring/baybus_76.jpg

Looks like you most probably have a two speed motor with no park function. If I am right about it being a two speed you will need to add a ground wire to the van's body structure.

I think the ground is the last pin to the left of the blue wire. You can see it directly connected to the plate of the wiper motor. According to the wiring diagram it would then connect to the dash.

If I am reading the diagram correctly then 53a would be the park and corresponds to the blue wire on the original plug. 53e on the diagram would then be the white wire on the plug labeled 31b. I don’t see 31b referenced on the diagram.

If you only have two wires and one of them is a ground, then you have a single speed motor without a park function.

The way I read their little paper is:

Pin 1 = circuit #53a = park function, not used
Pin 2 = circuit #53b = high speed
Pin 3 = circuit #53e = park function, not used
Pin 4 = circuit #53 = low speed
Pin 5 = circuit #31 = ground

If the pin 4 with the blue wire is actually grounded then the their little paper IS NOT MATCHING THEIR MOTOR AS SUPPLIED. You need to figure out for sure if the blue wire is grounded out or not, while being careful hooking your wires up to make sure you don't smoke something. Maybe use jumpers with 5 amp inline fuses in them when testing what wires go where to protect the wiring and the switch.

Thanks, Wild Things, that helps. There are two wires yes, but neither are a ground.

Pin 1 = circuit #53a = Park function: blue wire on the original plug/ Pin in
nylon connector connects to a contact below the plug,
under the gear cover plate.
Pin 2 = circuit #53b = High speed: Red Wire on the original plug/ Red Wire
coming directly from the new motor and isolated from
the chassis via the nylon connector.
Pin 3 = circuit #53e = Park function: White wire on the original plug labeled
31b/ Pin in nylon connector connects to a contact.
below the plug, under the gear cover plate.
Pin 4 = circuit #53 = Low speed: Green Wire on the original plug/ Blue wire
coming directly from the new motor and isolated from
the chassis via the nylon connector.
Pin 5 = circuit #31 = Ground: Brown wire on the original plug/ Grounds
directly to the gear cover plate on the new motor.
Hard to see in the pictures.

Over here in the UK we are buying these motors as VW Golf Mk4 windscreen wiper motors, for about £25 each.

Here is a decode of the wiring.

Also a discussion on the 99 relay for intermittent wipe, which comes with some extracted schematics for the wiper circuit.

Very similar if not identical to this post.

I believe the CSP motor is a later model motor part #251 955 119 and they include the connector and pins to connect to your existing harness.

VW of America lists it here:
https://parts.vw.com/p/volkswagen__/Windshield-Wiper-Motor-Front/48188824/251955119.html

Description from website says:
This product fits 231 vehicle variants.
Volkswagen: 8 models, 231 variants between 1984 and 1993.

Currently my bus is in the body shop getting a new nose after an encounter with a 2018 Jeep grand Cherokee. I'll let you know how it works out once I can get the wiper back in. Trying to refurbish everything I can while the dash is out.

Thanks mikedjames. Appreciate the help.

Took a quick look in the links you sent and found this. Pretty cool set up....
