Had this happen (stuck in neutral) on the way home from one of the Sacramento shows in the blue high-roof bay we have at the shop. I stopped for gas and on the way out of the parking lot I went from 1st to 2nd... well, it didn't make it to second. No bangs, no pops, just no shifting.

Turned out the problem was at the front of the bus, where the shift rod slides over a little support pin. The pin sheared off and the rod was just flopping around.

We went to a hardware store and bought a drill and some nuts and bolts & used the electrical outlet from an ice machine to drill a hole for a new "pin" made from a bolt. Smile

It's been a couple of years now, but as far as I know, it's still like that.

Send me a message if you'd like some in-person help with the diagnosis.

This could happen, Usually, they just get really funky trying to get a gear, The gears are hard to find when shifting. If the linkage pin separates there will be just a loose gear shift and it won't shift. I would think it would be very clear something was wrong with the way the shifter felt if this were this case.

Hmmm, don't panic but, might be broken differential gears.
If it "randomly" slips or -catches-

That was my second thought.
The first was is that my Bus? The white nose badge gave it away. My avatar pic was taken on Christmas day as I was leaving for work. Sometime that night, some crackhead broke my new antenna off to use it as a pipe. Looks like they hit yours too. Rolling Eyes

Well I had to replace all axles, but the one that broke looked cleaned up and had no grease and missing bearings it was cracked etc. They believe the PO put it together like that. Forgot to take a picture when they showed it to me dang it!. Maybe when I pick it up I'll ask to see the old parts again. They were surprised that it didn't make noise before it happened. so about 500bucks later I'll be able to enjoy my new ride Smile Thanks for all your tips, I felt welcomed to this awesome community.

A fairly expensive bill, nevertheless glad to hear the news.
I missed (earlier post) where it made the obnoxious noise during test - broken axles tend to fracture w/o much symmetry, are usually very audible & easy to diagnose consistently.
Would still like to view any carnage pix ........

I'm not sure how compression works.
Turbos don't produce torque, they produce HP. Instead of torque.
The real problem with NA engines is you don't hear the nice whine of the turbo as it spools up.
Before I commit, I'm going to do more research because I don't really know what piston rings are.

Well, it would be good to see what you're talking about. Hope they put in OEM axles and CV's! Where What broke. The Wheel Sub-Axle? The CV Drive Shaft?

I believe it was the CV they said they had installed 2 different kinds, a VW Bug half attached to a VWBUs half so wouldn't align perfectly and a bump on the road would make it come off and bearings fall out. I say half but not sure if it s the CV to the axle or what. Which is what they say happened. Sorry if I can't explain more. I have been driving it for about 2 days now with no issues. So hope it lasts Smile

Ok that sounds like an interesting scenario. CV Joints are about $50 But if you have to buy a good Bus Axle probably $90 for the pair and the axle.
Keep an eye on the 6 cv Joint Bolts that they don't come loose. Get a 8mm Allen wrench socket for them. (Might be a IRS 12 Point instead) Vice Grips work in a pinch!
Bus Depot Axle with CV's.
