Any tips for converting to u Joint steering on a 69 baja using the stock steering shaft? I'd like to keep the blinker switch and everything that's in the car. Could I cut off the colapsable part of the steering shaft and use a weld on u Joint? I'd prefer to use something that could be replaced without more cutting and welding should a u Joint fail or something. Thank you. |

I believe Borgeson makes a set of joints that are for steering applications....With your concept you will probably ave to add a bearing at lower end of steering column and put a solid plug in end of shaft for joint to clamp to....

Believe the are available most any upscale parts places, would look at Summit Racing or JEGS or someplace specializing in off road steering...

They carry those at my local bug place, I'm going with a rack and pinion on the new beam in my baja and I probly should have worded my question better. I'm more concerned on how to connect the u Joint to the stock steering shaft above the colapsable portion. |

And hopefully designed so that in the event of a front end crash the steering wheel will hit the roof and not your chest. Good luck and post some pictures please. |

Well if I cut the stock shaft just behind the collapsible portion the angle of the u Joint will be close to 40 degrees I think. So if it does come to a front end crash I think the shaft will move towards 90 degrees vs pushing the steering wheel into the car. Either way there's no way or room to leave the collapsible portion unless I use the stock shaft and extend it. We shall see once I get some parts and the tank pulled out of the way. |

Use a Super Beetle steering column, it's already set up for a U-joint. I believe the U-joint spline also matches the Standard Beetle steering box, but the shaft may need to be lengthened/shortened. _________________ Kenneth

The old lady would probly leave me if I got rid of the screwdriver turn signal lever haha. I'm semi restricted to what I can do to the car. It was given to us by her father who built it 30 years ago and it was her first car blah blah blah... anyways I got the beam, ordered the adapter and have to get some steering and brake parts to run new brake lines. Also have to figure out if I can raise the fuel tank or have to go with one of those aluminum or stainless buggy tanks. I also contiplated buying a bender and bringing the cage out to the beam but the welder I have access to is a 110v non gas mig and I'm not 100% confident with it. I'll keep you guys posted on how it goes and take pictures, going to be a few weeks gathering parts and materials. |

Bender-pick up 180*dies, buy once cry once.
Welded with handler 140 w/flux core wire. It's a step up from the old lincoln buzz box I used in the early 80's, but still a pain to clean up.

I got tired of replacing turn signal switches because my boot kicked it when climbing in. I put signal switch on a standard three position switch between the seats. Much easier to use too once you ‘learn’ the muscle memory for its location. _________________ He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.
