I run the low profile shroud used in Brazil. Hot VW had them advertised for awhile. No air outlets for the connection to the heater boxes since Brazil is in the tropics. But cooling ducts are inside it. It was an OEM Volkswagen part in Brazil. For sled tins, I run the pieces Berg makes to replace them. _________________ 1973 Karmann Ghia

I use a OEM German 36hp shroud modified to fit the DH fan with the stock cooler inside the shroud but with no oil in it. External cooler. Works fantastic.

Dan question, why are you using a skeleton oil cooler in the fanhousing?? For support, or plug the holes in the case or for Air deflection .
Or to make a whistling sound. Kidding just curious. |
I did not originally plan on hacking up the cooler. I bought the cooler in the samba classifieds and it was ballooned so to get air flow close to original as the shroud was designed to have the restriction of the cooler in place. The hack was my cheap quick fix. It also lost a pound or so doing this.
I pipe plugged the ports in the case. There is no whistling sound when it's running.
I guess I am just one big major hack artist.
I had this engine in my 356A you see in the back ground for a while testing my beehives, It now has the 1903cc 356 engine back in the car.

OK that is what I figured why screw up air flow that has been tested for 70 years. I think it is good idea. One of a kind STEAMPUNK Oil Cooler. I am hacker and into Steampunk and Deco era, it makes the parts art and important to see. Never liked Rat Rods till I realize it is art, you see the mechanical parts. Every Rod is unique, something special in our SUV era. Put a hundred of them in row and take away the emblems. Which is the Honda or Toyota, or even Chevy.

Good Idea? the whole setup or what I did to the cooler? I like the fact that with this setup 100% of the DH fans capacity is used to cool the head/cylinder and none is to the cool the oil. Also with the cold cooler the air for the head/cylinder is not preheated.
I have also used this approach with the DH shroud by plugging the air outlet to the DH cooler and running 100% to the head/cylinders. This also works very well but is less roomy for carb work or ugly with heater outlets cut off.
You can also see in my pics where I hammered in the back of the shroud to clear the big fan. More of my hackery.
