One question for those who have done the Corvair swap in a buggy.
Is support on the rear of the engine needed or is the Crown adapter plate plenty strong to hold the extra weight?
I only ask as Chevrolet concluded that a rear engine mount was needed. Most swaps I have seen just use the rear engine mount to hold on a bumper or a license plate."
You have to remember on a STOCK Corvair application, the bellhousing is about 6" deep, moving the bolted surface that distance from the back (front) end of the crankshaft - with a Crown (or other maker) adaptor, the mounting plane is closer - less cantilevered weight.
My Manx build (in process) will not have a rear mount. My Dad's Corvair buggy on a JC Whitney / Warshawski frame for all Corvair Components has had a Corvair Bellhousing / Transaxle / Engine, and no rear mount since it was built in the 1970s.

I am leaning toward incorporating a rear mount for the engine somehow into the rear bumper.
I would really like to use the old school manx style single bar rear bumpers. But I feel it may not be robust enough since it only mounts to the transaxle bolts and has no triangulation.
The rear bumpers that mount to the shock towers and transaxle bolts would work. But they just look far to primitive and clunky to me. I really want something a little more elegant.
There was a rear bumper sold by Meyers Manx that was nice. But it seems that they are no longer available. |

When Crown made the adapter for Corvair to VW transaxle they recommended the use of a front transaxle strap to keep things in place.
It what I used on a sand buggy I had back in the early 1970s with a Corvair in it.
I know of several people that have original Meyers Manx buggies that were built in the 1960s with Corvair engine that all they ever did was use the front trans strap to hold things in place and never worried about a rear engine mount. _________________ Joseph
