I have purchased Carlson front brake hardware kit 17162 for my '66 Beetle. It has all the necessary pieces, plus these two bent crooked lookin' ones. I've never seen such a thing and there was no such piece inside the drums when I took them apart. Anyone have any ideas?

Nothing what I've ever seen in '66 Beetle brakes. Each side of the vehicle has two short strong springs for the shoe retainers, plus 2 long springs to retract the shoes (the stronger spring goes on the wheel cylinder side). _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Those are for the equalizer bar, there isn’t one on our brakes so they aren’t used.
This one is yellow in this pic to give you an example of where I gets used in brakes that use it.

It looks like that kit is for the rear brakes. _________________ 56 Jungle green restored w/orig interior

The 17162 kit is for the fronts. The rear kit is 17179, and has both short/long shoe retaining pins. Carlson's catalog picture doesn't show the crossbar springs, so maybe it's something new to cross over to another vehicle using one kit. The crossbar springs aren't something that's used on the front of a Beetle, so just omit them like the other parts not being used in the rear kits. Most would just be happy Carlson is still making parts for a 51+ year old car. |
