This post is left by way of negative feedback for the above seller Dmonger.
I purchased a westy from him 2 weeks ago. The ad was not full of detail other than it was a daily driver, new engine and had a little rust in front floor and rockers. I subsequently asked a high volume of questions over email, mostly text and by direct phone calls. I also requested multiple photographs of areas of concern. I was assured there was not a major rust issue, I actually asked this specifically. I asked about specific areas such as below the windshield and again, was assured no rust. I received the bus and myself and a mechanic buddy subsequently discovered every single panel on the bus was rusted through. The bottom quarter of whole bus is bondo. the windshield is held in with silicone die to sever corrosion which has in turn trashed the dash. I asked about dash damage too and was told one small crack, actually there are 3 and it is rusted through. The sliding door does not slide due to there being no bottom track to speak of. The bus cannot be saved due to frame damage and severe corrosion.
I contacted the seller and asked for a refund, I even asked for some of the money back. I was told on both occasions that he is "not a body guy" and I should just turn round and sell it on to someone else. In all good conscience I would not do that to another samba member. This seller has been on here for years and he buys and sells buses, I find it hard to fathom he cannot see a corroded death trap. All the photos I requested conveniently missed ever area of major damage. I can maybe sell this for $2-3 k just as arts but I am very far in the hole for something i told this seller was a surprise present for my wife.
This post is not meant as vindictive but rather an attempt to stop this happening to another samba member. I fully understand I bought this bus sight unseen, I just made the mistake of trusting a long time member. I liked to think there is a form of community between us vintage VW owners. I have been sadly disavowed of this. Don't let this happen to you. |
