What can I expect for stock 1600 rings as far as quality and sizing, and whom should I purchase from? Have a lightly used 1600 DP been setting years, pulled heads off to check condition and repair as necessary, found 2 seized rings and a small crack from plug to valve, had a set of stock rings but they gap around .02 +, cylinders are very good they are the blue code which is smallest and check .003- .0035 over pistons
or 3.366-7. seems like rings should be too small rather then too large as far as gap is concerned, or is this the norm now? the .02 would be ok given the slight wear in cylinder but at the large end, would like to have less gap. _________________ 73 Type 181

Rings are not file to fit, unless you specifically bought file to fit.
99% of rings these days are already gapped, ready to go.
.020 is very good, that'll RUN lovely.
It might bother you to realize it will only wear wider....and that's true, but, just a few thou gap will hardly make any real difference. The ring side clearance will be over spec before the gap gets huge,......probably.
If you want the rings to last longer, get better airfilter and moly faced ring set, high silicon alloy pistons.
yeah, it HAS changed. Used to be everybody SET their ring gaps, but that was all they could do. Now rings can be manufactured more accurately, and if you want a BETTER job, there is a lot you can do. |

Well that's kind of what I thought, figured they made them on the large side, since I have the smaller cylinders I might get lucky and get some down at the lower side of tolerance, cylinders hardly worn yet, motor had around 30-40 k on it, and turned over by hand well, figured it might have rusty cylinders and dead mice in the heads so took it apart found the seized rings and crack in head, cyl. 2 amazingly, always figure 3-4 to have probs. pulled all the valves, guides and valves all still usable also, damn crack! 3-4 head perfect, just bead blast, new ex. and lap valves. Guess I'll order a new set of stock rings and dig out another head to use. Time is hell on the motors also! It was a little old lady autostick engine FWIW.

.020 gap ring....on a half worn out piston, seems to me a good match.
Probably a 311 casting head? Most are cracked now, they are just too old. |

FYI, Just received some stock size Grant rings, they measure .012-.015
think that is normal spec./fit for end gap. lot better then other rings I had at over .02 gap. _________________ 73 Type 181
