The problem with the interior unit is that the vent tube simultaneously heats the interior of the van too. You need to make it as short of a run as possible and insulate it if you can. |

Out camping this Memorial wwekend, got vey hot and humid. I tested both the interior unit, and my window unit. Hands down the window unit worked better.
Pro’s for the window unit:
1. Much quieter
2. Cools better
3. Takes up less room inside.
Con’s for the window unit:
1. Takes a little more effort to set up.
2. Must remove to secure vehicle.
Pro’s for the interior unit:
1. None
Con’s for the interior unit:
1. Noisy
2. Must find a way to vent exhaust air.
3. Does not cool as well as the window unit.
4. Fills with water in about an hour and must be emptied _________________ 1981 Vanagon Westfalia

No, the interior a/c was not an evaprator cooler. It worked like your window a/c but vented the heat through a duct. _________________ 1981 Vanagon Westfalia

take what you have.. set it on a crate/table something.. outside.. run vent to inside.. put a round grill cover over it if you worried about rain.. |

Here’s my setup. The canvas sleeve is from Fancher’s Upholstery. It velcros to the a/c and to the tent. A 5200 btu unit keeps me cool in the Georgia summers, but only after I install the quilted tent insulation (also from Fancher’s) and the window insulation (I think from Bus Depot). The condensation just drips down the front gutter, and the GoWesty rain fly can be used to cover up the Beverly Hillbillyness.
For cheap A/C units, visit your local pawnshop next time it’s cold outside.

Have you considered a marine type of AC unit?
Dometic makes a compact unit.
https://www.dometic.com/en-us/us/products/climate/...umentation
They use sea water for cooling of the compressor system.
If you had 120v access and tied this into a water source... |

Look! There's another. Pretty sure I saw it on a Eurovan at Everybus years ago. Or do you go to Everybus also? I'm old and things get confused sometimes.
I think the Eurovan I saw had a bracket arrangement to make the AC level. I know some compressors don't like to run sitting at an angle.
That's a sweet setup. |
I am looking for an a/c boot like yours. I contacted Fanchers and they do not make an a/c sleeve-could it be from another manufacturer? _________________ 1973 Westy (shared birthday)

That is freeing brilliant! I'm looking for an option for my 1994 Eurovan I just bought and that seems like the easiest way to do something. I guess I could get the insulating foil wrap and cut out a whole around to slide the AC unit in with the netting dropped down. I could velcro it to the outside or inside of the opening and boom!
What a great idea. Bravo and thanks for sharing.
Edit- can't do that because I don't have that space. Forgot the Eurovan is different at the front end than my old '82 from years gone by. Back to the window idea.

Isn't there a replacement EV canvas that has the forward window that VW somehow "forgot" ??? I am nearly certain I saw one on a big vendor site. Man, VW sure forgot some real basic stuff along the way, like the Jalousie's .. BoneHeads .. Oh, and not importing any westy(like) transporter since '03? C'mon! _________________ '87 Westy 'Flossie','86 Westy 'R1','86 tintop GL - Subi2.2 'J2','83.5 stock tintop L 'ZoomBus','74 Karmann Ghia, '63 Notch |

So, this thread is almost 'there'
I don't think a Vanagon is 40 Cu Ft, and its probably not accurate that its more like a dog house than anything else, but it is close enough...
here is something that could go in place of a fridge, or another that could go in the lower cabinet rearward of the fridge... Now, just to fit 300 or 400 watts of solar power on your VW (more if you want to charge up your batt's for an overnight cooling job.. )
Also, what's the big deal about re-arranging the compressor and condenser of some of the options? It seems like nobody wants to do any copper fittings, soldering of lines, and re-filling with r-134a or ecotek's r-134a replacement. For all us 'hands-on' folk it sure seems like taking a little A/C apart, fitting a Schroeder valve and stuffing different components in various locations isn't so hard to conceive of? Not like we don't put LP based heaters in places like these? Same skill set, I'd have to say..

Thought I would revive this to show my solution using some really nice brackets that a local guy makes. If you are interested, I have the contact information and can pass it alone.
Did a couple more things to the van including starting the wiring of the roof vent fan. Big thing was to get my AC set up done. I had worked on this earlier but winter came along and it wasn't as much of a priority. A guy local to me and well known in the local VW scene made the brackets. These are really nice, though not cheap ($200) but they are well built and versatile. They are precision laser cut, precision bent and powder coated to last for ever. As you can see from the pictures, it hangs from the drip rail and has pads at the bottom that rest against the body. A fully adjustable upper and lower bar (note all the adjustment holes) allows for a wide variety of AC sizes (BTU size, width and hight) and manufacturers. Mine is a 8000 BTU unit and with the top down and with a small fan pushing the air towards the back, it keep the interior of the van in the high 70's during the heat of the day (100 degrees max). When I went to turn it off at around 730 tonight, the inside temp was 68 degrees (about 93 outside). That will allow some good comfortable sleeping. I had already made a wooden base for my AC to sit on since I intended all along to use the passenger or the Driver's side windows for the unit but the construction of the brackets means that it could be used on ANY of the windows of a van or bus as long as the AC can fit through the opening. I still need to cut a piece of foam insulation that will fit within the window frame and seal around the unit for better restriction of outside air. If anyone is interested, I have his contact information that I can pass along.
