On the down side (and the reason I say we might have a winner) is that Jessica says the new trans popped out of first gear twice. I didn't drive it so I'll leave it for her to describe.

Yeah, so...once on my solo test drive, I put the bus in gear in anticipation of the green light and it popped into neutral. The light changed, I put it back in gear, and all was well. Same thing happened with D/A/N as a passenger...

How could it be that it didn't shift all the way into 1st twice? Popping out of 1st isn't really a "thing", is it? Last year, we put maybe 1,000 miles on this transmission and that was never an issue. First gear doesn't just go funky while a transmission is sitting on a garage floor, now does it? Given a choice, I'd rather it pop out of 1st than 4th, but does anyone have any idea what could cause this? More road testing will happen tomorrow when we've slept some.

This was my first thought... "mystery" rebuilt trans, no popping issues last year, and a trans doesn't wear out first or do any of the things Skills is talking about sitting inside the shop next to a tool box.

There was no play on the input shaft when I replaced the seal. I shifted it through all gears manually before install and no play or funkiness.

Maybe it's time to replace that shift coupler that had play. I tweaked it to get the play out but like I said it was a little distended and out of shape as if someone once removed the engine and just let the trans faceplant.

All of which begs the question... I've seen nothing but horror stories about new shift couplers. Anyone out there have any input on which brand is least horrible?

Wolfsburg West sells th VW/Audi stamped couplers and I have installed dozens with great results. CB’s HD coupler with flat grey inserts rattled and introduced extra slop.

I'll look at the shifter adjustment as well. While D/A/Neena are out road testing maybe they'll get a sense of whether some extra "oompf" on the shifter when selecting 1 keeps it in 1 or not.

Good info on the coupler. I'll advise them to get 2 while these are available.

I’ll text a local buddy to see if he has an OEM coupler in his stash. Would be quicker then ordering.

Good thought! They could go back up to Puddletown from here, then take I-80 to I-84 back to NYC getting passed on the right the whole way! Maybe even do a Lucky Lab sendoff.

Anyone up there who could throw it on?

Ummm, us? Unless there’s something I don’t know about replacing that particular coupler that mister Bentley won’t tell me?

German 30 PICT 3. We had it off because we also had to replace the alternator but made no other changes to jetting or screw settings. It might be a tight cable. I first set it too loose to get full throttle then re-did the cable to get full throttle and may have done it too tight. We put in close to a 12 hour work day yesterday and got pretty foggy by the end.....

What's with these Bosch AL82 alternators? This is the 2nd one we've had that started acting goofy (and not in the same way) in under 10k miles. Gotta find a 38 amp generator!!!!

I've even seen those fail, with the cage spinning on the part that fits the selector shaft. Nothing a bit of extra weld can't/won't fix, and while it shouldn't be *necessary* on a gen-u-wine VW/Audi part .. this is 2018.

High idle even with throttle cable disconnected. Work the throttle without the cable and it’s closing. What brings the idle down is pulling the vac line of the distributor. Gonna have to do some more digging. Throttle positioned is removed.

I've seen the transmission shop at that address, but have never noticed them to be particularly VW oriented .. and I've been driving up and down SE Foster on a weekly to daily basis for 13-14 years. Maybe I'll have to haul my pair of broken 5-ribs over there someday and see if they can work some magic.

Brian? Not Robbie? Either way, we’re happy to buy a 38 amp setup and have it shipped home. I think one drive train pull per vacation is enough. PM me!

I think they're totally serious. Part of the (Mis)Adventures on Friday was the "G" light popping on and idle speed rising on the way here. A visual of the alternator showed lots of black dust around the pulley area, just like the one last year had. Both alternators lasted about 8000 miles each, and D/A/N has always expressed interest in owning an upright with an original generator, so...

These were both new Bosch. They now have an EMPI reman on it sourced locally, so maybe it'll outlast the Bosch or it's already taken a shit. Who knows?

Going back cross country remote sightseeing means they're often without wi-fi for long periods so what may seem like disinterest on their part may actually just be VanLife with yoga pants, buttcheeks, and no cell connection.
