So anyways... here's what I know, or what I think I know, at least as of approx 2:30 PM PST:

The popping out of 1st wound up being a "quirk" rather than a problem. In much road testing yesterday it appeared that care must be taken to get the New Mystery Trans into 1st firmly, then all is well.

The NMT seems to perform on par with the used 4th popper we removed, but is easier to shift and less sloppy. Some of that may be the coupler cage I did a bit of metalwork on.

As stated above... alternator was replaced. It's now an EMPI with the outtasight warranty... if it's out of sight, it's out of warranty... or was that a lifetime warranty- when it fails, its lifetime is over? Hmmmm. It was a hundred bucks, and it's outta MY sight, so that's all I give a fuck about. Laughing

Fuel pump pedestal was removed and resealed, and a genuine VW/ Audi oil sender installed, and it seems that between that and an air filter that lets the breather breathe, the oil leak is minimal if not gone completely.

Weird high idle/ timing advance bullshit- Carb was slightly loose on the manifold- a snug took care of lots of it. A pair of badly pitted points was replaced, then dwell and timing was adjusted. The emissions made my eyes water, so out came the sniffer and we got it leaned out to 12.5 on the scale, right in the middle of the conventional idle zone. Then we choked idle speed down to about 850-900 with the bypass screw.

Rechecked dwell and timing and now removing/ reinstalling the vac hose only results in an approximate 100-150 RPM idle variation. D/A/N asked if this was "right"... I don't know, but I'd ass/u/me that they have you set timing with it disconnected and plugged for a reason.

Since we were here with a shop and equipment, neena did an oil change. Of course I got to keep the used oil... thanks guys. Surprised

They then loaded (and I do mean LOADED) the Bus back up, installed the bicycles on the rack, and off into the sunset they went... really.

I half expected to wake up and find them camping in the compound just to fuck with me, but they seem to really be gone. I don't think they are too keen on heading back East to the Gulag and work...

I'd say this is a "happy ending", but it's THIS BUS so we all know it'll be one of the longest running series ever... just like "Gunsmoke". Can't wait to see what they break next! Laughing

But seriously... here's to a safe and happy trip back to classrooms full of screaming, medicated little bastards. You never thought "back to school" was just as traumatic for teachers as it was for youse when youse was growin' up, didja? Wink

Since leaving the Tram compound, we can report the following:

Trans: Popping out of first continues to be a sporadic problem. Initially, it never happened under load. Now it occasionally does. "Cruising" around a campground in 1st will pop it out of gear. Under normal driving conditions it's not really an issue at all. Looks like we'll need another rebuilt trans after all. At least this isn't as bad as popping out of 4th!!!

Oil leaks: We are still surprised every time we open the engine bay and find it dry! In the end, changing the fuel pump gaskets, putting Permatex Aviation b/w the case and the bottom gasket, and re-packing the base of the fuel pump with grease solved the biggest and most persistent leak. Today, a VW old-timer who was waiting to seize our campsite kept sticking his head in our engine bay because he was amazed by how clean and dry it was Very Happy

New business: Our only new issue is that the accelerator pump gasket is seeping fuel both after shutdown and when we press the accelerator pedal when the motor is running Shocked We stopped for gas and discovered that while checking the oil. Decided to stop for the night and address it when the engine is cool in the morning. If it needs tightening, we'll have to lift the carb to access the screws, and if it needs replacing, we have rebuild kits. Anyone experience this before? This isn't yet another symptom of boiling fuel is it?

I have had a similar issue with an accelerator pump in a Keihin motorcycle carburetor. I believe the Solex/VW design is similar in that the pump is really just a diaphragm activated by the motion of the throttle. In my case, the diaphragm had developed a crack so that when it was pumped, some fuel escaped past the diaphragm and leaked from the carb. I would guess if your rebuild kit has a spare accelerator pump diaphragm then you should be good to go. It would look something like this:

Yeah, that's the first thing we looked at this morning. The diaphragm looks fine....pliable, no cracks, etc. but we tried another anyway. No change. What changed things was tightening down the upper two screws on the pump cover a 1/8 turn more. Loose screws???? Gonna have to keep an eye on that because fuel was spurting out all over the damned place.

There's also a slight amount of weeping from the throttle shaft on the alternator side when working the pedal with the engine off. Engine on, no weeping as I guess all the fuel is being sucked into the intake. Gonna keep an eye on that too today. Still have a spare German 30 PICT 3 if need be.

Simple things first, eh? That might be a nice spot for some thread locker. Or some gasket sealer.

I have seen that too on my carbs if working the throttle with engine off. To my knowledge there isn't any type of seal at the throttle bushings so I would expect some seepage if spraying gas down the carb throat without any suction/vacuum from the running engine.

Resultant sore throat and postnasal drip just makes it grand. Hope it's not going to be a repeat of last year this time. The orange sun gets old. They are saying it will clear out this afternoon but this afternoon is already here and no dice so far.

Enjoy the rest of your trip. Seems as if this Bus was just born to leak something at all times... in or out.

No, we didn’t have it out and I’m pretty sure I’ve got the IQ to figure out what to do when a condition repeats itself. This leaks from where you “fixed” it. Now, we say “I’m gonna check the oil and clean up Tram’s mess” whenever we stop to fill up the tank Laughing

Nah, I slapped a "DIESEL" script from an old Mercedes on the rear hatch instead and we called it good. Cuts down on the mosquitoes.

We did a compression test and all cylinders were above 125 so we didn’t do a leakdown test. We’re also not going through oil at an alarming rate....yet. I suppose we should be tallying more accurately how much we add. At the same time, wouldn’t one burn more oil driving 60mph 8 hrs a day when it’s 90* out than one would in regular daily driving?

Maybe the air cleaner is too full? The oil that leaks out generally looks lighter and cleaner than what’s on the dipstick.

OIL control and compression can be independently bad but getting oil out of the air cleaner is either blow by or too much oil , user error.

I’ll go with Occam’s razor on this one.
