Opinions 1
1986 VW Vanagon - $2900
The owner had it for 3 years.
VW Vanagon 86 4 Speed manual transmission has a 1.8 Jetta motor is my Daily Drive.
Daily usage.
Opinions 2
1985 Volkswagen Vanagon - $4900
The owner had it for 14 years.
This Vanagon drives and shifts great. Has many new parts from suspension to motor that was replaced.
Only use it for camping.
What do you guys think?

Just pictures alone I wouldn’t do the first but that is kind of a shallow comment without lots more details.
First one looks rusty but has a more desirable motor. Nothing else.
The second one looks clean and probably a whole lot less rust.
Motor swap? Trans work?
I will take Door number two please. _________________ VW LT40 build. Like a Vanagon but 30% larger in every direction and 40% slower even in metric.

I like the 1st one with the I4.
but it's rear seat doesn't make a bed.. that can be changed..
what do you want to use/do with one? _________________

The second one based on what you showed.
The first one has had a lot of bad body work to hide seam rust.
Notice that it is 'missing' the lower drivers side seam since it was covered up by something.... me thinks a shabby repair, seen it before..... |

For us we need more pictures. For you, you need to see them in person. Look over the whole van. Pull up the carpet, the side step rubbers, Rust around window seals, body seas, bubbling paint, underbody condition, engine and shifting.
Ask to take a look ask to make sure the engine is cold and see how it is on a cold start.
Just the regular stufffff |

Ask for a local samba member or VW club member to go with you.
There are lots of things to look for and an experienced owner will help you a whole lot. _________________ Dave O

Do what dave said. Solicit the help of a member down there. Might help with lowering the price if they see you come with an "expert" |

I've said it for years: buy the cleanest airframe you can find. Mechanicals can be renewed relatively easily, but, unless it's something like a Ferrari GTO, rotted tin is not worth renewing PROPERLY.

You should ask a vanagonqualified mechanic how much they charge for a PPI.
It should be $500 give or take
If you aren’t prepared to work on this yourself, this is not the car for a 5 year pattern of reliable use. Do not think that you can’t find people who know these cars nearby like a Honda. You will meet the nicest people ina Vanagon, though _________________ .ssS! |

I'd buy both of them. You'll need the spare parts. Both have their pluses. In Fla, AC is nice. The 1.8 power train has pluses too. _________________ ☮️ |
