Googling about the 2001+ Eurovans I found a bit more info about the "Low Speed Traction Control" in the 2001+ Eurovans.

Here's the short story - Non-EVC's had the full suite of VW's ESP (Electronic Stability Program). EVC's had ONLY the EDL (Electronic Differential Lock) feature.

Here's the long story - the following provides some details about "Low Speed Traction Control". I was wondering about the details, maybe this explains it. https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/threads/volkswagen-golf-iv-electronic-differential.113379/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9m84r4vkPMk

Less than 25mph the EDL (Electronic Differential Lock) is activated via ABS sensors.

The full suite ESP has an ASR (Anti Slip Regulation) feature that reduces engine torque which means the engine won't rev up high if you're trying to get the wheels spinning to dig out of snow or mud. "Controls throttle response" is how VW explains it.

Eurovan has a 'ESP disable' button on the dash if you have the full suite of ESP and that is a very nice feature. http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=267838

So, non-Winnebago 2001+ Eurovans have the full ESP, Winnies only the EDL. I guess it's not a big deal since that godawful nanny that cuts engine power when you're trying to dig out of mud/snow or climb hills on dirt roads can be disabled.

It's a matter of simplicity I think, the full ESP has extra modules to complicate troubleshooting if there is a problem.

This 2003 Winnie absolutely has about a 4' wider turning radius compared to the 1995 Winnie. 4' wider radius means an 8' wider turning circle. That sucks, but that's how it is.

Went through the 2003 a bit today. Replaced the rear seat paddle latch, easy. Replaced the monitor panel "Level Test" switch, easy.

Cleaned the poptop awning with a Thetford product, couldn't get all of the stains out but it wasn't too bad to begin with. Sprayed Aerospace 303 awning waterproof after cleaning.

I noticed with both the '95 and the '03 the awning stains are a result of improper closing, specifically closing when wet and leaving it closed. Add in pinches at the sides. The Winnie tops seem to be a weatherproof design, but care has to be done.

I found a bunch of squeaks and rattles, tightened some screws, added some shims and weatherstrip. The monitor panel had a buzz when I tapped it so I put some weatherstrip in. Every little thing helps. The side door is awful, I'll get to that tomorrow.

The 2003, installed poptop struts, had to use the GoWesty ratchetstrap method, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5YsbpwqRGI

A few pics, it's a stock 2003 EVC, so no exterior pics. Here's the interior midway through upgrades. 2-ton scissor jack, towstrap, CaveVan 1.25" spacers, D-ring Clevis shackle. PO had custom seat covers for everything, I put them on the rear seat, nice fit.

Front window mildew stains after cleaning with a Thetford awning cleaner and nylon brush.

3M spray-glued foam weatherstrip to the side door to close the gap between the side door and the factory rubber seal. I've only owned two Eurovans and both have had a significant gap at the side door lower seal

Been diddling around with both the '95 and the '03.

'95 the AC doesn't blow cold, fan works, I'd like to get it working before selling it. One good thing about dropping the front skid plate to look at the compressor and 12v connections is I found oil pan bolts were loose.

Oil pan is Allen bolts, I found two that were halfway backed out and was the source of an oil drip, the other ones I could get to took 1/8 turn to snug them up.

'03, I'm having trouble getting the 1.5" rear lift spacers in, there's not enough droop to reinstall the coils with the spacers. I'll try a C-type spring compressor.

'03, I like the E-brake design on the rear discs. The E-brake is on the disc pads instead of a drum E-brake slapped onto the disc assembly.

Finally got the '03 lifted and 225/70/16's on. New Bilstein HD 4600's on the rear, CaveVan 1.5" lift pucks. Still waiting on the front Bilstein HD's.

The front can go up more, but the GoWesty socket isn't deep enough. It was bottoming on the T-bar and sliding down the torsion bar adjusting nut so I had to stop.

Hooray for adding an autotrans dipstick to the '03. Cost me $70 from Europarts-SD, $50 labor while the ATF and filter replaced. I can't do some maintenance because I can't operate on a flat surface, it's too tall for my garage.

However, it was worth the money to make sure the shop didn't overfill or underfill the ATF.

The '95 is for sale on Craigslist, here's the ad - https://denver.craigslist.org/cto/d/1995-vw-eurovan-camper/6684320802.html

OBO of course, be brutally honest, say what you think it's worth. You can read my history with it on this thread.

I think it's a clean vehicle, there really is not a single speck of a leak from the engine, trans or coolant system.

excellent thread here thanks!

I'd say $5k too high ? , I recently looked at a 95' with a manual trans for $15k - it didn't have your upgrades so.. similar condition...

dunno though, east coast van vs rocky mountain?

anyhow

The '03 EVC, put a new center muffler on it today. IMO, there should be a hanger at the rear of the center muffler. That's a long stretch of pipe on the LWB EVC.

SWB may not be a problem, but my leak was at the weld on the rear of the muffler, too much flex IMO. This is what I used http://www.eurocampers.com/Center-MufflerResonator--DANSK-1997--2003-EuroVan_p_482.html

You can see there is a hanger at the front, need one at the rear. To compensate I wrapped muffler tape around the muffler then wired it over the heat shield.

Finally put new sparkplugs into the '03 AXK. Waited until it wouldn't cold start worth a damn, P0300, P0302, P0304 codes for misfires.

NGK plugs, old ones I bet were the originals, had the Audi logo on them, 127k miles, pretty consistently burnt, didn't have any that were markedly worse than the others.

Pretty easy install, remove upper grill, release side marker lights (easy, nice little finger hook to do so). Remove lower grill. Remove four bolts, move the radiator forward.

The tabs to release the plug wires were kind of a pain, there's better designs. Pulling the tubes wasn't too bad, unclamped the intake from the throttle body to get to the upper bank. Started much, much better at 40* F, I'll see how it starts at 20* F tomorrow morning.

Found the source of the P0171 at the same time (maybe/probably), brake booster vacuum tube had a crack in it.

Yay!!! 18*F this morning, van started easily, minor stumbling for a moment. Warmed it up for a minute and on my way.

127k miles on the spark plugs had to be an issue, iridium anodes were used up, the grounds were burned. Add in the vacuum leak causing a P0171.

Was looking at replacing the PCV valve, I see you have to buy an entire tubing system, $150+.

Yay again. 15*F this morning, the '03 started easily, still has a minor stumble for a bit. Not ideal.

About 80 miles with new sparkplugs, rubber cemented the crack in the brake booster tube. Runs and shifts well, got 14.5mpg city for the last check, hopefully that goes up. No new codes.

Getting loaded up for a Southwest trip for a few months, ATF is good, glad I had a dipstick installed if only to make sure an ATF flush/fill isn't overfilled or underfilled. No leaks, no worries.

The fresh water system is winterized right now with RV antifreeze, will flush it when we get to NV. Open desert in NV, AZ, CA temps can dip into the low-20's but the Winnie is set up well with the furnace next to the fresh tank, I doubt there will be freezing issues. I do love having a builtin furnace.

LP generator is loaded, two 20lb spare tanks, Renogy 200W solar folder is loaded, assortment of tools are in, jump pack. One of the main reasons I wanted the Winnie conversion is the LWB, the extra cargo space is nice to have.

So nice to have the VR6 instead of the 5-cyl. Passing power, climbing power. For those with non-EVC's the 5-cyl may be fine, but the EVC is about 700lbs heavier right off the bat.

Add in the extra cargo room, which I take advantage of, which means extra weight, I bet if I weighed the '03 right now it would be close to 6000lbs. 18mpg over a 720 mile trip on I-70 and I-15 dropped to 2nd gear once on Ike and once on Vail, both times still was doing 55mph.

So nice to go into the dirt on a 34*F night and have a furnace.

Nine nights into the trip, overnight temps dropping to 28*F - 38*F, the furnace used 3g LP the first five nights, refilled, used 2.8g the next four. Been keeping the interior at about 64*F, could go warmer but not necessary.

Orig Norcold fridge is fine on AC and DC, it does work on LP but has a hard time staying lit so I haven't bothered. Save the LP for the furnace. I run the 2kw LP genny a few hours a day, has kept the fridge interior temp at 35* - 50*, that's fine. The genny has used 6g of LP in nine days keeping the fridge/laptop/phones/aux batt/etc going. One of the main reasons I went with the Winnie is the extra length for cargo, knew I would be hauling the gen and LP tanks to power it, along with portapotty and all the other necessities for extended offgrid travels.

BTW, the Winnebago data sheet inside the cabinet shows UVW as 5168lbs (stock curb weight plus the Winnebago addons). CCC is 829lbs, GVWR is 5997lbs.

Add boondocking equipment:

- 20g water = 160lbs
- solar = 25lbs
- genny = 52lbs
- LP tanks = 40lbs
- food = 40lbs
- passengers = 310lbs
- dog & food = 90lbs
- Tools = 30lbs
- Misc = 50lbs

Apx 800lbs cargo so traveling at GVWR. 18mpg I'm happy with, handles well at interstate speeds, I like the bigger brakes on the '03 model. Hill-climbing on dirt with that much weight and 2WD probably isn't too good but I haven't tried anything steep.

I did exercise the traction control getting through a gully, soft silty dirt, RF started spinning, dug a pretty good hole, then the front locked up and pulled it through. There has to be a 600RPM difference between the wheels before the ABS engages, so you have to juice it a bit to get engagement. Wish it was 300RPM, actually I wish it was 4WD! I don't know how far to trust it offroad, however I have a pair of folding traction ramps and rocks are always available as traction aids.

Trying out the WeBoost 4G-X cell signal booster right now. https://www.repeaterstore.com/products/weboost-dri...WYQAvD_BwE

Works well, went from unable to connect to 2 bars 3G.

New coach battery for the 2003 EVC. Group 27 deep cycle from Autozone, PN 27DC. I think a Group 31 would fit into the box, I'm not sure if a 31 has more reserve capacity. 27's are strong batteries.

Exide 27 that was in it when I bought it showed a birthday of Feb, 2016, but the past few nights in 25*F temps the furnace has run it down, wasn't as strong as before running the furnace. Had some acid showing on the + terminal, time to swap it out, I'm not a big fan of keeping a battery when acid starts leaking.

Here's some NV pics:

Thanks. Twixt Mesquite and Vegas. Mesquite is a nice base of operations.
