Situation- alternator not charging and light not lighting at startup.

If I externally ground the light, it will light, but, s not grounded on its own.
Where would I check this for the bad ground?

Thanks

I believe it doesn't use a ground as it just completes the circuit so if bulb is burned out = no charge. Check your alt. brushes.

Bulb is not burned out. Have checked with known good bulb and socket.
Key on- alt- light does not light.

Trace the wires looking for bad connection, if all good take alt. to flaps and get it tested.

Check autohauseaz.com if you need parts.

make sure that you have power to the red with white that connects to the bulb, go to the blue wire and first check to see, with the key in the on position if you have a ground. If not, go to the front of the relay board in the engine compartment, remove the two rear phillips screws and back the board back, pry off the top exposing the two rows of pins like eggs in a carton, hook your test light to the positive post of the battery, pull the bulb out of the alt light socket and see if the blue wire is grounded. If it is there is a break, if it is not then substitute the voltage regulator. If that does not make a difference then replace the alternator. Make sure that the alternator harness is firmly plugged into the replay board and properly connected to the back of the alternator.

thanks for the direction. so far haven't gotten past discovering that the blue white is NOT grounded with the key is on (or at least it is a very intermittently poor ground.
discovered a bit of a rats nest behind the instrument cluster. surprise surprise.
biggest so far was the terminal ends of the red/white power wires taped to the lead of a blue/yellow. Blue/yellow dives back into the wiring harness taped together. has micro spade connector, but these were taped with electrical tape.
any suggestions/hints on what this might be connected to?
also, there's a stray black/yellow strip wire. it, too, has a micro spade connector/

thanks again.
Mike
