I have the fill neck etc. out of the 83 didn’t know if I could move it over to my 1980. I know there are different fill neck sizes and outlet sizes. I’m trying to save a few bucks so I can install all new fuel lines. TIA!!!

Don't know the answer, sorry, but might suggest you ID whether the '83 was air-cooled, or an "83.5" water-cooled -- if there's a difference.

This reply is either helpful, or entirely, utterly useless. Wink

You'll get a real answer soon, hang tight and Good Luck. 👍🏼

It’s an 83.5 water cooled. I’ll try to edit my post to clarify.

As I understand it, the size of the hole and filler neck varied.
If you have the tank and the filler neck size mismatch is of no concern.

Nah, you're fine, await the ones here with less air in their heads than me and you'll get what you need.

The tanks are pretty much the same. The earlier tanks like my van have a large hole with a metal filler neck. The later model tanks had a smaller hole for the filler neck and the filler neck is made out of plastic. Early and late model tanks can be intere changed as long as you use the correct filler neck parts. At some point vw increased the size of the fuel line fittings as well. New tanks are not that expensive so unless the used tank is perfect I would just replace it. John

Yes on a new replacement! Good thought there......

Any used tank is "well used" since the Brontosaurus days. I personally wouldn't risk my entire fuel system, injectors, odds of breakdown, etc. to save here.
