a friend have installed a late 28 PCI on his beetle. that carb has the connection of the vacuum advance in the left (cables) side of the carb and not in the base like the earlier. i believe this is from a late standard engine. which kind of distributor is suitable for it? maybe a mid 60 pneumatic advance one? Thanks

Best information can be found in the technical section in the technical bulletin M1
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/techbulletins/m1.php

1966 VW Engines - 25 & 30 bhp last two rows (sedan) of page 4 will have any info you are looking for.

Yes, those tables Mr. Lang linked us to are excellent resources.

The ZV/JU 4 R 1 was originally only installed on the Ghia. It has a uniquely shped vacuum canister with a threaded nipple. It's a small bodied cast iron distributor with the condenser riveted on the outside.

The ZV/PAU 4 R 1 was also used only on Ghia and with the exception of the threaded nipple and short steel pipe looks much like the big cap cast iron distributors.

ZV/PAU R1 left ZV/JU 4 R 1 on right

The 113 905 205 B is not a Bosch distributor it was made by Garbe Lahmeyer

The distributors paired to the late 28 PCI carburetors are without any doubt rare and oddballs due to their age and low production numbers.

The vacuum canisters on the ZV/PAU 4 R 1 and 2/4/5/6 are different shapes but have the same signal characteristics.
